Re: Berkeley 2010
Thanks Emilybeth! What were your stats if you don't mind my asking?
My GPA isn't super Boalt friendly (3.54/172), so as far as the essay goes, I'm stressing big time over it because I see it as the only thing left I can do to help my super-long shot. Boalt is absolutely my #1 top choice, and right now I'm basically saying that in my PS, which is working out to be my stadard 2-pager woven into a 2-page "Why Boalt" that explains why I think it's the best school for me.
Is this a lame idea? Is it too suck-up-y to assert that there's no school I'd rather attend? My original plan was to expand on my 2-page PS and make it "better", but after months of editing I'm reluctant to inflate it at all.
Most of my other apps have been sent and I'm just now sitting on this damn PS while the Boalt adcom is going through other people's apps! I need to pull the trigger soon.

For all of those "low" gpa kids, my stats are in my box
Unfortunately, EB's 50-75th on both (well, fortunately for her).

I've been "under review" for 2 weeks now, so I wouldn't anticipate an impending decision if I were you. Then again, Dean Tom said he didn't start reading apps until Halloween, so who knows...SanBun wrote:went under review today- to all you who went under review today, when do you think we can expect to hear back???????tintin wrote:a phonecall could be just days away!!! i can tell im going to be on edge all of this month and the next.

hahah yeah, I don't actually think we will start hearing for (at the very least) a week or two (probably more like three...)crackberry wrote:I've been "under review" for 2 weeks now, so I wouldn't anticipate an impending decision if I were you. my status checker says 10/22 so I think that's when I went under review. Submitted Oct 1.

When I visited and talked with an admissions counselor they told me that they'll start looking at apps first week of november.
Good Luck everyone who has applied!!!

(2) bigger does not equal better. (heh.) if you've been revising your PS for months, then chances are it's probably at its best point, and inflating it at all is likely to do you more harm than good, unless you have something especially compelling to say. i absolutely don't think it's a bad idea, however, to expand it to be boalt-specific, as long as it's done well. that is to say, boalt knows they're fantastic, and dean tom said in an interview on this site that an applicant simply flattering the school doesn't put themselves in any better position than one who keeps it general. HOWEVER, i do think there is something to be said for taking the traits which you think make a law school absolutely fantastic, and addressing in your PS how those traits are particularly relevant to you & your story, and why. for example, if you want to study here because of a particular faculty member, i think it would have a much greater impact if you were able to weave that professor's experience/area of expertise into your own interests/areas of expertise, rather than just citing the professor's general awesomeness.
if it's true that there's no other school you'd rather attend, and you demonstrate this well, i absolutely don't think it makes you a suck-up.
i hope that makes sense ... i'm not on TLS a whole lot, but if you want someone to bounce ideas off of more specifically, shoot me a PM.

Yeah, I only saw one person on LSN with an acceptance on that date, though. This person had like a 177/3.95 if I recall correctly.GhostDynasty wrote:So last year, first acceptance was Nov 4?

Re: Berkeley 2010
does anyone know if waitlist / rejections are sent out alongside the first wave of acceptances, and if this first wave is mostly auto admits or rejects?
edit: answered my first question, looks like they hold off on rejects at least for the first month or so.

I feel like Berkeley doesn't buy in to the whole "auto-admit" thing. Their numbers tend to be more over the board than other schools so I wouldn't be surprised to see some in betweeners get decisions.
