Just wanted to point out, in case anyone missed it, that there is a legal writing orientation on Friday at 1:00PM.

Re: SMU 2010!
The PTers had our first night of orientation last night. Unfortunately we hadn't agreed on the secret TLS handshake.
I had a great feeling of relief to have some finality to the admissions process that began one year ago.

The Torts syllabus is loose-leaf. It's another $2 for binding, but it's pretty big.

Who are all these people in nice clothes? Is there something other than orientation going on?

Yeah, we dropped the ball on the secret handshake. I'm looking forward to the combined dinner tonight. I'll go ahead and out myself. I'll be the old guy with black shorts and a green tee shirt with a black hawaiian shirt over it (just to dress it up a bit!)DavidB wrote:The PTers had our first night of orientation last night. It's for OCI. No one else is here for orientation, but I'm in jeans and a polo.

Anyone who questions the neccesity of URM preferences in admissions should come to an SMU orientation.

Re: SMU 2010!
Hahah Im glad someone noticed that people of color were...few and far between to say the least. Kind of funny, though I experienced it in undergrad too.kalvano wrote:Anyone who questions the neccesity of URM preferences in admissions should come to an SMU orientation.
But to be completely honest, with most law schools the percentage of minorities are pretty low. Especially in Texas. Even UT hasn't dipped below 65% white yet. Crazy.
Edit: Also, sorry about the dot thing I forgot for a time til I saw thirteen but by then it was later in the day. I'll do it tomorrow, then I will find you kav. You're section one right? Prolly why our (mini) sections didn't interact.

Re: SMU 2010!
Observations and overheard things -
*Forrester is supposed to be very nice, and not mean at all in class. Everyone described her as very sweet, though she does give a closed-book exam.
*Martin (Torts) is new, so no one has feedback on him, but it was generally agreed that new professors are often times easier to work with.
*Anyone who thinks law schools do not have attractive women has never been to SMU.
*Cashen is supposed to be very tough for LW.
*I found the emphasis on how grades aren't that important odd. I was talking with my dad afterward on the way home and he did too. Grades are about the most important thing.
*Lawyers love to listen to themselves talk. Today could easily have been 2 hours.
*I was astonished at how under-prepared a lot of people seemed. Nice, but nowhere near the level of preparation one should give to a $40K-a-year endeavor. Not knowing about briefs, outlines, exams, anything.
*Past exams will be available around Thanksgiving in the library. Most professors package 3-5 exams and example "A" answers for sale in the library.
