many people believe they are bluffing, and will evaluate your 173

Hey everyone,

I was ED/deferred a couple of weeks ago, which was honestly better than I was expecting. Anyone have any idea what the odds are of getting accepted now? I tried looking up LSN to see last year's cycle, but I couldn't find data for the people that were ED/ deferred.

Also, what are you planning on doing to try to get in at this point? I was planning on having an additional 1-2 LOR and write an additional essay. Is the timing on this important? Would it be better to send this info ASAP, or to assume that they won't be revisiting my app for a while, so there it would be better to wait?

Any advice at all would be appreciated.

Thanks :)

I'm a retaker and wondered about this when I was applying, so I emailed the admissions office and asked. This is what they wrote back:

WEBINQ, Webinq to me

Thank you for your email. Yes, NYU takes the average of multiple LSAT scores.

Thank you for your interest in NYU School of Law.

Sincerely,

NO NO NO. NYU generally doesn't average. Look through this topic. Many people here, myself included, were accepted with stats that would've been questionable if NYU straight up averaged scores.

I keep seeing posts like this on TLS, insisting that schools are lying when they say they average. Clearly there's anecdotal evidence to suggest this is true, but I still don't get it. What's their motivation to lie? If they take the highest score, why not just say so? By lying about it, it seems like they'd needlessly discourage a lot of people from applying. Am I missing something?

I spoke to an NYU rep at an LSAC law forum who told me they do indeed average unless there is a 6+ point difference.

NYU says they don't average so that they can choose to average or not at their discretion - the higher score helps their US News rankings anyway, and they have more flexibility to do whatever they want. if they like you, maybe they won't average. if they don't like you, then maybe they will.

i agree. they are only reporting the top score, so what in the world is their motivation to average? nothing basically, except strategy i suppose

while admissions is numbers based, that doesn't mean schools are COMPLETE us news whores. they might still want to put together the best law school class and think the average is more predictive of 1L performance.

Tell that to the 30+ people who got in with less than a 168 average.

Does anyone know when NYU's ASW is? I forgot to put it on my calendar.

This is what I get for checking my mail once a month. Could have saved myself lots of stress. Hai guys.

Does anyone know if NYU pays for our airfare to fly out for ASW?

Did anyone do any sort of special essay for NYU? Is it necessary to alter PSs or will they see right through at? i.e., do you take the Ivey approach and just send your normal PS and hope for the best? (I'm know I'm probably destined for the WL)

No, in fact NYU is one of the few schools where the dean has come out and said that an NYU specific essay is not required nor helpful. That being said, my original PS already tickled all of NYU's sweet spots so it really couldn't have been tailored better if I had tried.

NYU hates me. I'm basically the only competitive applicant to not hear yet from the 11/17 complete batch.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
