if you look on the report lsac sent to columbia it lists your lsat and next to it there is the index. they round up so you index will read 4.5.

also, thanks for christening my lsn wall. I'll let you know if I get a JR1 but I'm expecting a WL at best sometime in march.

looked up the CLS guaranteed housing. wow, that is not a deal: http://facilities.columbia.edu/housing/ ... ns#ectrade

they're asking you to pay what you'd pay in the west village for something in morningside.

That's funny, because I'd say it's quickly becoming more of a "dwindling flicker" than a "shining beacon." If I had to use an analogy, I'd say it's sort of like a distant, dying firefly on a moonless night.

Or something.

I heard that you have to have your parents co-sign on apartments just to have someone rent to you. and that everything is terrible. true/false?

I got nervous that there was some mixup with my file, so I called the admissions office. Apparently they sent the email to the wrong kid

depends on what you're trying to get and how much money you make. i dont think it would be a problem for someone living on guaranteed loans like law school loans, because the landlord knows the money is coming in.

basically landlords want to make sure you have a source of income and will be able to pay your rent. generally they'll ask you to prove that you have / make 35 - 45x the monthly rent. (it sounds like a lot of money). otherwise they'll ask for a guarantor (lots of people use their parents if their parents have that kind of coin lying around). however if you've got roommates you can combine your income, and that usually works out fine.

k there is no way I have, make, will have enough loans, or have parents that have or make 45x rent. I will be homeless.

No I mean I don't think I could make that happen for ANY reasonable amount of rent. I don't make anywhere near 45x what I am paying in rent now and my apartment is really, really cheap.

Some landlords are much more lax on this. But, honestly, its more doable than it seems. Housing in Morningside might be expensive (maybe -- I've had friends who have lived there for reasonable amounts), but you can always look in Washington Heights or, if you don't mind the commute, a borough. I live in Queens, my apartment is huge and incredibly reasonable, I live 10 minutes from Manhattan and probably about 35-40 min from Columbia.

It is not terrible here! I promise!!!

I wouldn't fret over it. You're not even close to the only person who doesn't make 45x their rent in NYC, and I don't think those people are living in hovels and feeding off of stray cats.

No. Honestly, don't. Public transportation is great, and parking is impossible. Even if you find a space, you have to move your car every other day. Definitely not worth the expense.
