HLS off the waitlist. It was a hard decision, but my family lives in New England and health reasons compel me to stay close to Boston, so personal reasons tipped the scale in Harvard's favor.

Wow, congrats. Sounds like you made the right choice.

When does CLS start notifying reserve people? Does anyone think they'll pull from the reserve list this year? NYU sounded like they weren't planning to go near their WL at all...

Just got on the second reserve list, not expecting anything and still not sure if I'd go there at sticker. But what the hell, I'll ride this to the bitter end.

Can someone with experience with CLS (either a current student or a well-versed admit) address Columbia's reputation as an uber-competitive school whose students are miserable? Any info about Columbia versus NYU would be really appreciated as well -- I get the public interest aspect of NYU as a differentiating factor, but I'm looking for more nuanced info.

It's not super competitive. We're not miserable. There is a lot of collaboration among friends, study groups and classmates. People are generally willing to help you out if you miss class and need notes, you need something explained, you're looking for a good supplement, you were to lazy to outline, etc.

There are some douchebags/gunners, but you'll find this at any top school. The only competitive tendency that really annoys me is people hounding each other to talk about grades, but I doubt this phenomenon is Columbia-specific.

Can people who get off the WL get loans? Or is it too last minute to apply for loans?

I would assume you can. I can't imagine any school not allowing their WL admits to apply through their FinAid office. It may take a little longer to get the money, but I would imagine they would be understanding about it.
