Yeah, I'm beginning to think that "hold" at HLS = WL. No one has yet reported a WL and we're already at March 8. Whereas at CLS there is a (relatively) clear distinction between "hold" and "reserve," at HLS, it seems "hold" = WL.

This is probably only true for the JR1 -> no JR2 people. I'm sure all the JR1-less people are getting admitted. hth

We will receive simultaneous JR1s/JR2s, everyone else will be WLed.

Are we sure that we don't have the same phone number? I always thought I heard an echo every time I picked up...

It was pretty nice minus the lack of grass and natural things. and the hipsters, but none of them are smart enough for the law school anyhow from what I could tell.

Probably the best school for public interest in the nation based on the support they give you and the programs / clinics they have. Yale and Harvard both have the same stuff, but with their endowment it'd be embarrassing if they didn't. I was surprised to see that Stanford doesn't have guaranteed summer funding for people in PI jobs, which kind of sucks (but obviously if I get in I'm still going).

I think that its pretty clear from lsn that there are still a fair amount of admit spots open. These spots will mostly be filled with people from the hold pool. The problem is that the hold group is just a whole lot bigger than I had initially thought. The hold pool is made up of maybe the last 100 or so admits plus the entire waitlist pool. Harvard waitlists pretty much half the future CCN class... Anyways, hold isn't a guaranteed waitlist but it certainly isn't a separate smaller group or anything. That being said, I think two things are clear that help explain JRs relative silence as of late: 1. Harvard has admitted fewer students at this point in the cycle than previous years (new dean being cautious?) 2. the pool of held students is pretty sizable (several hundred). JR isn't working on a rolling basis any more. Now instead of picking out the best applicants quickly as they come in he has a set number of given 'outright admit' spaces open and a definite number of borderline applications to pick from. Now instead of reading files as they come in and making phone calls, JR's most likely going back through the hold pool carefully to pick maybe the 100 best out of 500 or 600 files is Therefore, the recent silence likely can be attributed to the change from a rolling process based mostly on clear-cut numbes to the messy process of filling x number of seats from y roughly equal applicants.

Anecdotally, I've heard that while it's not guaranteed per se, everyone who does summer PI work who applies for a grant gets generous funding at SLS.

i think this may be an overstatement because of the possibly large number of people who hide profiles until end of cycle, or people who will create profiles later in the game. like i said earlier, a larger-than-expected portion of the CLS people i talked to about it had been admitted to HLS.

Joining this thread for the moment...

I think there has to be a decent amount of spots left for them to take so long and put so many people on hold. I can't imagine them putting so many people on hold merely to fill a relatively small patch of spots. I'd expect a straight waitlist instead. Of course I could be dead wrong I'm not an admissions wiz...

I cannot figure out why they are putting recent applicants on hold, unless they have no intention of sifting through the hold group until much later. Which is bad!

Gotta be a downer and disagree here. The perfect time to put large numbers of borderline applicants on hold is when you only have a few spots left - once you have your numbers locked down and a general idea of what the class will look like, you can leisurely go shopping for applicants who will add diversity to the class. Putting people on hold lets you do that kind of comparative applicant shopping. JR practically said as much in his most recent blog post (and woe to the late applicant who happened to go to the same high school as an earlier applicant!).

1. in previous years Harvard waitlisted huge numbers of students (last year around 200 on lsn alone). That is to say that they delayed rejecting hundreds and hundreds of applicants even after they had likely admitted 800+ out of their total of 830ish admits. 2. There is no evidence that there is a 'straight waitlist' option. Its pretty clear that getting waitlisted this year is almost always preceded by a hold (except maybe for like Feb. 1 applicants). That's not to say that hold to admit isn't a possibility. In fact I guessed before that there are probably somewhere around 100 spots open to be filled from the hold pool.
In later April HLS will likely put most held applicants on the waitlist. Most likely several dozen hold will have been admitted in the few weeks before that as JR goes over all holds to fill the spots left open after the rolling auto-admit cycle ended a couple of weeks ago. After that, a bunch of people tend to get off the waitlist over the summer months. fun fun

Umm... I just got in--applied in Oct., held in Jan., and JR1 mid-February. Unless I took the last open position in the class, they are clearly still accepting people.

How does Harvard get the LSDAS report? Paper or image? How does does it usually take to become complete after the report is sent?

Looking at last year, there are a few people who went complete around the same time I did (late January/early February), then got JR1s in late March without being held and got in. So I'm feeling a little bit more positive today.

All of you are nervous about having been held. I'm nervous about not having been held, although I'm not sure anyone complete as late as I was has been held yet.

That's an early JR1-->hold applicant getting a JR2 today. I believe his/her JR1 was on 11/3 (same day as mine).

Also just in! JR2 call at 3:11pm EST. My application cycle is under the same name on LSN, if you're interested.

I thankfully have a voicemail as proof because I was teaching an afterschool program. Also means I didn't have to babble excitedly on the phone; I hate sounding like a ditz to other men.
