For example your essay is not very "readable" according to your statistics. I'm not saying you should dumb it down, just make sure you farm it out to a lot of people so you know if people are getting lost or turned off by the complexity. Readying ease of 0-30 means this is something that can only be easily followed by university graduates. Keep in mind that just because you can write at that level doesn't always mean you should. Most adcoms are university grads, but a grade level of 17.9 is beyond university. If your PS goes over someone's head it will lose effectiveness.

All that being said, I haven't read your essay. Just commenting on the stats.
I thought the same when seeing this. My PS went from something similar to a very straight forward final version.

:!:

Writing at a sub-third grade level is bad, right?
The higher the Flesch Reading Ease, the better, supposedly. It probably means that you were very honest, straight-forward, and didn't beat around the bush -- a good thing for a PS -- which will make it stand out against the soup of 'impressing-you' writing out there.

A problem with all statistics is that they can't control for particular variables in a given context. Perhaps most people who get the readability score that makes it too high should "dumb down" their PS, but people shouldn't use the stats as the only guide to do such a thing. Some people just write more densely and technically and for them it might flow much better in reading than the stats suggest.

Did this for both my PS and my "Why School X" essays (wrote for each and every application) - I tried to write in contrasting styles to show depth, and the Flesch score seems to reflect that...

First, PS:
Counts:
Words: 485
Characters: 2009
Paragraphs: 5
Sentences: 45

Averages:
Sentences/P: 9
Words/sentence: 10.7
Characters/word: 3.9

Readability:
Passive sentences: 2%
Flesch Reading Ease: 92.4
Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level: 3.0

Now, the "Why School X" Essay:
Counts:
Words: 623
Characters: 3599
Paragraphs: 10
Sentences: 26

Averages:
Sentences/P: 2.6
Words/S: 23.9
Characters/W: 5.6

Readability:
Passive Sentences: 7%
Flesch Reading Ease: 18.0
Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level: 16.6

1. congrats to him
2. i didn't say there was anything wrong with his PS. i just said people should watch for things like these and make sure that it is not too complex to get the real point across. Clearly if he got into harvard, he did that. I was using "you" in a general sense as opposed to directing it at the user that I quoted. I can see how that was not clear.

Actually you guys do realize that with Managamys stats the PS could have been:

Admit me Harvard, I dare you not to! (PS~ I Hate New Haven & don't like the West Coast)

And he still would have gotten in... sooo i'm not too sure we can use the Harvard acceptance as judge of the PS.
