Charles Cannon, the Irvine law school's assistant dean of development, said it is past the halfway mark in raising the $6 million it will need for scholarships to cover the inaugural class' three years. The UC Regents set the cost, but the school is assuming just over $34,000 a year for California residents, and another $10,000 for out-of-state students, Cannon said.

If there is a spot that the economic downturn has definitively shown itself, it would be in fundraising.

Cannon said that a number of law firms and businesses have postponed the decision to donate or scaled back the amount they'd consider. There are at least four law firms that are still considering a scholarship gift worth between $30,000 and $100,000, he said.

I see it more like they're already at the halfway mark. They only started fundraising less than a year ago I think, right? They have raised $3 million and have another $3 million to go for the 60 students, but they have 3 more years to raise the rest. My letter that offered the full-tuition scholarship didn't say "...unless we're not able to raise enough money", so I don't think the students need to worry about their fundraising efforts.

Did anyone else get a letter from Dean Ortiz about 'connecting admitted students'? For lunch in Irvine on March 8th? Anyone going?

Yes, I got the email, but I can't go. I will be visiting the campus on March 17th or 18th however.

Ya, I think I'm going to go. It sounds pretty informal, just a chance for the admitted students to get to know each other.

Can someone who's been accepted to Irvine and received an e-mail for that informal lunch get together ask Ms. Ortiz to see how many people they've admitted? Or you can just frame it by asking how many people she's expecting to attend the lunch.

there hasn't been any activity on LSN for UCI over the last few weeks...

do you guys think they are waiting for Feb scores to come out before making more decisions?..

Not sure, but my guess is that they are waiting to see how many admitted students accept or decline. Since they can only offer up to 60 scholarships, it must be really nerve-racking for them to have to wait until April to know how many new applicants they can admit. They don't have the same flexibility most other schools have in relying on history to determine what % will accept their admission offers, so I think they're being safe in the chance that too many people might accept if they admitted more than 60 people. My job is stressful, but I don't envy their admissions committee right now.

Does anyone think they'll start admitting in the lower 160's in the future? Their numbers right now are better than Hastings/Davis and I can't imagine all those students choosing Irvine over higher ranked schools. Wondering if I might have a shot...

No. Relying on hope is not a good strategy.

I'm not holding all my cards for UC-Irvine...if it happens, it happens. I'm just wondering how others out there feel the cycle might shape itself in the next few months because I really like what I've seen of Irvine and it's always nice to dream...

I hate to scare you, but yea it seems about right. I live in Tustin/Orange area and Irvine in like 5 minutes away. A lot of my friends live there. Look, Irvine is pretty hardcore about cops and speeding and a million other things, and it all DOES look exactly the same, ......wait I forget where I was going with this, I had something pos. to day but now I forget....at least it's clean!

j/k sorta. its pretty and clean and fun stuff around....but really it is a lot like cookie cutters and pleasantville. I like it...

If you rely on the Urban Dictionary for valid and reliable information about the qualify of life in communities, then maybe Irvine is not for you. As a resident of Irvine for 25 years, I can tell you that it is clean, safe, close to Laguna Beach and Newport Beach and a nice place to live. The university, which I also attended, is excellent, but definitely not a rah-rah school like USC or Wisconsin. Students there are studious (think U of Chi. for comparison) and the largest ethnic group on campus are Asians (larger than Caucasian). The city is not a police state. If you are serious about studying law then it might be a good choice. My only concern about the law school is the lack of an alumni. But the faculty looks to be top-notch -- which one would expect with its Dean and the brain drain he has been able to accomplish from Duke and other top schools.

Does anyone know the details of Chem's contract? There is a lot of "key man risk" here.
