Are you going for environmental law, by chance? I am. Just curious - because that probably helps some applicants, considering that L&C is the #1 ranked environmental law school in the nation.

I focused my statement on how my earning my degree in geology shifted my interests towards law, and my statement included a paragraph explaining my interest in working for the National Crime Victim's Institute at L&C, as well as their certificate in criminal law. I am interested in environmental law, but not nearly as much as criminal law and civil/administrative legal aspects of sexual assault cases in education. I am a tree hugging dirtworshiper, but that fact alone got me into geology more than law.

When you say majoring in geo shifted your interests to law, do you mean that you realized you didn't want to pursue a career in geology? That's what happened to me in biochemistry. I majored in biochem because I've always liked science and I knew it would be tough and respectable - but by the time I was a junior I realized I didn't want to be a doctor or work in a lab - so I started shifting my focus to the issues I care about: global warming, energy, development, etc.
This realization was a focal point in my personal statement.

I haven't got the deferral email everyone's talking about (yet?), so maybe that means I could be accepted and waiting on snail mail! ::Fingers crossed::

Oh boy, just got in via snail mail! Dated 2/2, included a map of Portland, which was a nice touch. Applied in mid-November, had the whole "decision processed" back to "application file complete" drama on 1/22. Good luck to everyone!!!

*Gasp* Activity! Congrats! I had similar drama but with 1/28, so perhaps I'll know soon as well.

Well... nothing. Which is slightly disconcerting. If they don't I probably won't go, but I thought it would have been in the packet. So, maybe I just didn't get anything, haha.

I thought some people had posted earlier that L&C was offering up to $500 for travel to their ASW? Was that only for special people?

Well, they said there would be more in April. Are they waiting to see what first-picks withdraw from L&C - so they can reassign that money? Regardless, there should be more money. TLS says over 45% of applicants get grants of some size.

For all interested, I went on my tour yesterday and sat in on a class. I'm not sure if my experience was typical, since I went from 5-7 in the evening, but the tour was given by a current L&C 1L. I felt a bit overdressed in slacks and a sweater; jeans would have been perfectly acceptable. It was definitely valuable--I felt that the student was able to answer my questions with more candor than an adcom would have, and it was nice to have a 1L's perspective on campus life and so forth. After the tour (which included one other prospective student), we ate dinner with a few other students at the small law school cafeteria (they make sandwiches to order and have a couple of other options), and we went to CivPro class. It was nice that my tour guide was also in the class I attended, so I didn't feel entirely out of place. Surprisingly, it was fairly simple for me to follow along with the material; the vocabulary was recognizable, and my tour guide was happy to share her book with me when the professor went over examples. It didn't seem to be an intimidating environment, either--the professor asked for questions after each topic was discussed, and there were only a few people called on during class. I was also told by my tour guide that most of the professors are accommodating if individuals are unprepared, and that it is easy to pass if called upon. The class was only an hour, which is apparently typical, so it was easy to focus on the lecture without my mind wandering. I did observe that most of the students prefer to use OneNote rather than Word during lecture, and pulled up their outlines from the assigned reading in the same document.

Well that’s after you have to give them your seat deposit... I'm not going to be very comfortable committing to a school with no guarantees that I can get any money...

I thought some people had posted earlier that L&C was offering up to $500 for travel to their ASW? Was that only for special people?

I found some hotels in Portland that were not bad for much lower than the discounted L&C hotels. However, there is no shuttle to the school, so you would have to get a ride somehow.

The $500 was only for certain students (it says so in the letter). It was probably their (adcom) intention in stating that that people not reveal that the money was offered to them (but that's just my guess). However, they might be willing to reimburse for some expenses if you ask them. I don't know, but it cannot hurt to ask.

On the running out of money, I know that L&C ran out last year by some time in February. I'm sure that some money will come available in April, but your guess is as good as mine as to how much and to whom it will go. I can totally understand how needing to know about money before committing is important. I could not commit somewhere unless I knew I was going to get money. However, maybe the money will come available before the first seat deposit is due.

Happy and collaborative. There was one student I met who told me it wasn't worth the money, but we've all heard that... it depends on how well you perform and what type of law you practice. Other than that, everyone was very positive and seemed extremely satisfied with L&C. Also, Animal Law Review lets 1Ls join after 1st semester, which may be of interest to some.

Unfortunately, because I went at 5pm, the admissions board had already left. There was one potential student who was also visiting, but she left after the tour--she had sat in on a class earlier that day.
