They did debunk the rumor about stacking all scholly students in the same section, which is nice.
My biggest concern is finding a job if you're not bilingual. For BigLaw it isn't a problem, but for mid and small sized firms, and maybe even government agencies, I'm afraid I'll have a hard time without knowing Spanish. I read that roughly 2/3 of Miami is Hispanic.
To be blunt, I'm also concerned that it may be hard to get involved in local politics if I'm not Hispanic, and I was hoping to maybe pursue that one day.

If I knew this to be true, it would certainly make it much more likely I'd be attending, but I've just heard it from too many people. It's going to be hard to turn down that $23k/yr, but I just can't afford to lose that scholarship one year into this.midrangejumper wrote:"i heard a wild rumor that miami lumps everyone that got a scholarship, regardless of how much $, all in the same section. is that true?"

I agree. I find it hard to believe that a student or administrator in the chat would admit to this because it wouldn't reflect well on the school.Blakkout wrote:If I knew this to be true, it would certainly make it much more likely I'd be attending, but I've just heard it from too many people. It's kinda like asking somebody if they are a crackhead. Even if its true, they aren't going to admit to it, even if you have plenty of evidence to suggest otherwise.geoanthem wrote:I agree. You're pretty much right on with your assessment. But keep in mind 20 miles up 95 in Fort Lauderdale, the situation is totally different.js87 wrote:They did debunk the rumor about stacking all scholly students in the same section, which is nice.

How long has it taken for people to hear from them generally?..I applied 1/20, and haven't heard a single thing from them.

For a lot of people, they have a pretty quick turn over. For me, it was two and half weeks, but I have heard of shorter times.gdizz01 wrote:How long has it taken for people to hear from them generally?..I applied 1/20, and haven't heard a single thing from them.

I emailed them and asked if I was complete, and they said yes. My status checker has the link that says view admission documents needed, or whatever. Is that was yours said until you were admitted?krs387 wrote:I applied mid-January and got in via online status checker in about a week.

Took a campus tour today and met with an admissions counselor. They completely debunked the scholarship section grouping rumors. It's a really nice campus with the law school having its own building/quad. All in all I'm happy I visited. It'll make deciding easier when time comes for a decision.

Thanks for the heads up! I'm excited to visit on law day next month. So far, Miami is on my short list.kbigs wrote:Took a campus tour today and met with an admissions counselor. Same here. I visited in January and am glad I did so. I'm pretty much deciding between here and York (in Toronto).

How long should it take to hear back? I received an email yesterday saying they have received my app from LSAC but need 10-12 days to receive the hard app.

Thanks!
I left my hotel in south beach at 12:15ish. It took me about 30 min to get to campus. I parked, went to the law building to get my parking permit from the recruiting/admissions office then ran back to my car. In the 15 minutes it took me to get back to my rental car I had already gotten a parking ticket. I got back to the office and the tour got underway. The guides were knowledgeble about the campus as you'd expect them to be. They showed us the career counseling office, the library, classrooms, and student organizations offices. After about an hour the tour ended and I then met with an admissions counselor and like I posted earlier, she went to great lengths to refute the section grouping rumor - apparently groupings are completely random. She said the south Florida legal market hasn't been hit so hard by the recession as to result in any offers being rescinded to grads entering the market after this year's graduation. She invited me to check out a symposium hosted at the school today on sports and entertainment law, but I wasn't able to make it.
The UMiami campus is pretty big, but very scenic. The school of law's building is right next to the main campus' library. It has three floors and wraps around a quad. It had a real good atmosphere and vibe.
And it was 85 on Thursday, for those making a decision based solely on consideration of climate. Gotta love Miami in February.
