This honestly is a really poor reason.

I know it would be for normal goals and that you shouldn't go to law school to chase environmental or entertainment or health law programs, but if they're writing their dissertation for a PhD in a specific area of legal philosophy, wouldn't it be to their benefit to be at a law school where they have faculty to draw from and do research under? If their goal is legal academia in legal philosophy and they have the PhD in progress (which I'm assuming is the grad program. Otherwise my point is moot), then I don't see this as being all that bad a reason to put Stanford lower down on the priority list.

Yup I'm doing my PhD now. Again, it's not that the lack of a legal philosopher is a deal breaker, but if i'm shooting for an SLS-caliber school, Harvard and Yale have the added benefit of having more robust law and philosophy programs. Plus, I want to be open to a faculty member at my JD program being part of my dissertation committee.

Yeshiva is actually a decent choice if you want to practice in NY, especially for free. Superior employment to a lot of state/regional flagships around the country, such as U of Washington.

Y goals in this case means actual legal employment.

What is the advice on when to apply for someone who is retaking in September? 3.45/171 right now, retaking without too much confidence in improvement.

What's the consensus on a "Why X" for Chicago? I'm looking at their website, and they specifically mention additional essays for LSAT addendum and diversity statements, but have nothing mentioning a "Why X" or similar essay.

Little reason to do one, IMO. The school is good enough that no one needs to convince them they'd actually attend. It could come up on the interview, so that would be your opportunity to explain why you want to attend.

Chiming in to agree with others about negotiating. Apply broadly because schools will listen to other offers and you never know when one school you don't plan on attending offers you big $$$. Also, I know Berkeley gets a bad rap but I was able to negotiate with them. Schools that say they don't negotiate, like Michigan, do negotiate. It never hurts to ask. Just be nice.

You can request that schools hold your application until they receive your new score. They won't start reviewing anything until your file is complete, but they get all of your other materials right away and you probably get a small jumpstart on other September takers who haven't done this.

Sorry for being salty about Berk I was above median and above 75th, and they decided to accept me and offer $0 while I was legitimately considering going if they gave me something decent. It seems like their class is built more of people who have great stats and get scholarships, URMs, and California-or-bust people who are willing to pay sticker for the location incentives. Just not a good fit for me, I suppose. Congrats on your success with them, though!

I agree that Michigan probably would negotiate in spite of their emails specifying that they won't. I didn't get anything out of them, but they gave me a very fair offer right out of the gate without me having to pester them, and I ultimately owe my success in negotiating to them. They were great leverage.

Re: scholarships. If the ultimate goal is to maximize money at my regional (UW), is there a "best approach" or something similar for both targeting schools to apply to/timing apps etc? Was under the impression that if I can get anything from a T-13, it'd help my chances for a higher scholarship at UW, but I'm not sure how that works
