Negotiating scholarships works!!!!!
So I sent out an email to San Diego after their initial scholarship offer of $23,000 a year asking for an increased amount. Today, I just got a letter saying I am receiving the Dean's Honor Scholarship which covers full tuition ($39,000) and a gives me a living stipend! This pretty much just made my decision.

Wow! Congrats man! I bet you feel pretty clever for that e-mail eh? They won't give if you don't ask.... Way to go, seriously that's so awesome.

Never been, but I'm assuming I'm going to like it a tad more than the weekly snow and rain I'm getting dumped on me here.hope ya enjoy the wonderful weather here, unless your here already
Thanks everyone. And yes, you should definitely try if you haven't -- I was never really sure it would work but it definitely won't go up if you don't try. It only takes a couple minutes to do, so why not right?

you mind giving us a sense of what you wrote to sway them??
I'm sure many people, including myself, are contemplating asking after reading this.

Re: Negotiating scholarships works!!!!!
168/3.4
I just sent it to the financial aid office. I started out by saying I just got news of the scholarship and I am honored to get it. I then said that San Diego was one of my top choices and listed some reasons why I wanted to attend. Then I continued with the however section where I listed my scholarship received from Illinois. I argued that the COL in San Diego was higher as well as the cost of traveling home. (I'm from Illinois) I finished by saying San Diego was very appealing but that financial considerations were important as well. "If there is a way the cost of attending San Diego could be lowered even further, it would certainly become my top choice."
It's pretty basic but got the job done!

That's a distinct possibility. I know I got a lot of help from some threads here so if it sounds like your letter than all credit should go to you!

Re: Negotiating scholarships works!!!!!
with a 168, that's really bizarre you didn't get the full scholarship/stipend in the first place....maybe they wanted to see if you were seriously considering them?

I didn't find it that weird really. My GPA was only 3.38 when they offered it to me. Not exactly an eye-popping number. I figured I would need to be +75% on both numbers for a full ride. Obviously I was incorrect.

Re: Negotiating scholarships works!!!!!
Congrats!
Now, what if you aren't negotiating to up your scholarship money, but just negotiating to get a scholarship, period. Would the letter still go to the financial aid office, or to the dean's office?
My situation is that I've been accepted to Georgetown, Columbia and NYU, and I'd like to use my acceptances to Columbia and NYU as leverage to get a scholarship at Georgetown. Any tips for how to delicately broach the topic of "i got accepted into better ranked options, so you should give me a scholarship to make me consider the school"?

I really, really wish I could negotiate my Penn State scholly...but it's the only one I've received, so...I have nothing to weigh it against! Anyone negotiated a scholarship without another one to compare it to?!!

Do you think it is reasonable to ask your top choice school for money if none has been offered?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
