Would love to hear about Iowa Law as an out of state student. Does and Iowa Law degree open doors nationally or mostly in the Midwest? Any insight is helpful!
definitely not nationally

+1

You should really only be going to Iowa Law if you intend to stay in the midwest. Some students make it to NY, DC, CA, etc., but they are the exception and not the norm.

Thanks for the info! Can you speak a bit about life as a grad student at Iowa? Again, very broad question but any insight is helpful. What is Iowa City like? Is the student body primarily from Iowa?

Not currently at Iowa but I'm from there and had many friends go there, so I can speak to it a bit. While I can't speak specifically about the grad student population, the undergrad population is half Iowans and half out-of-staters, mostly from Chicago. Iowa City is awesome. It's not in a cornfield, as I'd assume most expect. It's known as a party town by undergrad kids and has a ton of bars, but it also has a lot of culture (it's a UNESCO City of Literature, one of 20 in the world) and arts. It's laid back, but also a lot of fun. Definitely take a visit if it's one of your top few. It will be a lot different than you expect.

I'm also from the great state of Iowa. Iowa City is indeed awesome. There's plenty to do, and Iowa really has a ton of school pride, so football, basketball, and wrestling games/matches can be a blast to go to with friends. It's also fairly low cost of living (probably on the more expensive end of Iowa too, which says a lot about how cheap most parts of Iowa are). I can't recommend visiting enough if you are considering in Iowa/Midwest, and you aren't gunning for big law, then Iowa is a great school.

I can't imagine you getting a weak offer. Your stats put you in line for probably 75%+ of tuition.

Up to that amount, according to MyLSN. Some people around my stats only got 30/40k. I wouldn't consider Iowa with less than ~$105k with my current best offer. We'll see!

Does anyone know how much money as salary the 2L and 3L research assistant positions make?

I assume not much, but it would be helpful in coming up with my total COA.

I would guess like $10 an hour or less?

I can't remember exactly. I saw it somewhere, it was like $2000 a year or something
Edit: from their website, just over 2100 for each academic year

I'm late to the party, but I'm a current 2L at Iowa. I'm also happy to answer questions about the law school or Iowa City or my favorite pizza place or whatever the case may be.

What has your experience at Iowa been like? What are your career goals, and where do you want to work when you graduate? Is there anything you wish were different about Iowa law?

Iowa's been good to me. Academically, I've connected with some seriously talented professors who are passionate about teaching and I would say I have an excellent working relationship with several, including my sponsoring RA-professor. I have some gripes about the comparative lack in breadth of classes at Iowa compared to other schools, but, what we do have is adequate.

Socially, Iowa was better last year. 1L year, we had a much more active bar review scene, as well as outings like the pre-classes bar crawl, the talent show, and PHIDs tailgates. For some reason the alcohol-based activities disappeared (our only major "party" type event this year was the Halloween party); while I still am able to go out with the friends I've made, it's sometimes nice to have an all-law-school outing as well.

I'm planning to work in intellectual property litigation. I'll be in Delaware this summer at a biglaw IP firm and am hoping to receive an offer from them at the end of the summer. I'm currently applying for federal clerkships, although that's less important to me on the career track.

In all, I'd say I'm glad I came here. There's things to like, and things to dislike; for me, the pros continue to outweigh the cons.

Quick question on $$$. I was accepted in mid-January and still haven't heard back about money (160, 3.67). Was hoping to have heard back by now as I've gotten emails from Iowa about housing, ASW and all that but no scholarship email. Should I temper my expectations or hold out hope that the email is just running late? Thanks.

I was admitted 2/6. Since then, I've gotten event invitations, a student reaching out, housing info, a travel reimbursement offer, etc., but no scholarship info. People with similar numbers have gotten significant scholarships. Argh.

Their status checker says that they try to award within 4 weeks of acceptance, so we aren't hopeless, yet, but 4 weeks is a long time to wait for scholarships so late in the game. We'll have less than a month to negotiate and make decisions pre-April seat deposits.

I'm still waiting to hear back from some schools too. I just want to know everything now so I can make decisions!

Along these same stressed-out-need-decision-now lines; does anyone know from personal experience if Iowa will let you know if you AREN'T receiving a scholarship? I am an extreme splitter, so not holding out too much hope, but it sure would be nice! I got $$ from WUSTL, but I don't want to talk about it to Iowa until I hear at least something from them.
