Has anyone here successfully negotiated their scholarship offer? And if so, did you use offers from other schools in doing so? I really think I would be willing to go to UA over even a couple T14s if I could bump up my offer a little bit, but I don't really know what to expect from them.

You would almost certainly have to use offers from other schools, preferably higher ranked ones. Alabama might be more stingy with negotiating, since it sort of dominates it's targeted market (the state of Alabama) and only somewhat competes with others (DC, NYC, Atlanta). I'd say a good offer from an Emory or even a Georgia might go a long way, but I wouldn't count much on many others. This is complete speculation though, so if anyone else has any insight I'd also be interested in hearing it.

As a 3L at UA who successfully negotiated for more money, I thought I would share my experience.

My first piece of advice is to apply to a lot of schools, even if you're not particularly interested in attending. The reason being is that you might get a great scholarship offer that you can use as a bargaining chip when negotiating with the schools you do actually want to attend.

When I was negotiating with Alabama, I had already received full-tuition scholarships from two or three other schools. All of these schools were lower ranked than Alabama, but they were still solid law schools.

I emailed UA's admissions office the week after I visited to let them know about my other offers. I said that I was really impressed by my visit and that I could definitely see myself at Alabama. I basically told them how I would be financing my legal education myself and that I was very apprehensive about accumulating debt. Even though I thought the school was excellent, it was difficult for me to justify the additional cost.

Almost immediately, they emailed me back and said they would increase my scholarship from 50% tuition to 90% tuition (with the ability to be reclassified as in-state after my first year). Overall, I've paid roughly $10k in tuition for my J.D., which I think is a good value.

How long does it take for a decision to be made after the second under review date?

Anyone attempted negotiating with UA yet. And, what was you experience?

Did you use other offers? Offers from higher ranked schools, lower ranked schools, higher acceptances, etc...

Alabama rose two spots in the USNWR rankings and Harvard dropped one so who's the real winner today?

Did anyone else receive a FAFSA letter in the mail from Alabama dated March 6? It basically said I had not yet been admitted, but it gave me a campus ID number and said to write it in ink on any documents in the future. I applied in December with a lower than median LSAT and GPA, but do have very strong softs. I was definitely expecting it to be a rejection letter.

This is messed up. I have very similar LSAT and lower GPA and got in with significant $$. Seriously would love to know the thought process here.

Anyone else randomly have their scholarship modified recently? Just got an email saying they were going to increase mine. Never negotiated.

I also got a decent scholarship increase last week. I emailed regarding cost of attendance recently, but did not actively negotiate by any means.

If I haven't been accepted yet, are my odds basically 0?

This is what their website says about admissions:

"Alabama has a rolling admissions policy, which means that applications are considered continuously throughout the admissions season. Applications are initially reviewed in roughly the order in which they are completed. Some applications receive an immediate decision; others are held for further review by the admissions committee. We make our decisions as quickly as possible, but the time necessary varies from case to case. There may be applications that are completed in the Fall that do not receive a final decision until late in the admissions cycle. We evaluate each application thoroughly, considering the entirety of the application. This holistic approach, coupled with our rolling admissions process, allows us to ensure that each application receives attention. It also allows us to make careful comparisons between applications completed at different times. There is no application deadline for Fall 2015. However, the committee begins admitting applicants before December and seats are filled as the season progresses.

By the end of May, the admissions committee typically will make final decisions and create a wait list. If an applicant has questions about the status of his or her application, he or she should feel free to contact the Admissions Office."

https://www.law.ua.edu/admissions/application/faq/

Maybe if you haven't heard yet they're waiting to see how many deposits they get on April 1st before making a decision, or are planning to add you to the waitlist.

Yes, they are willing to negotiate. I used COA figures from peer schools as leverage. Examples being W&M, Florida, and SMU.

*raises hand* It's one of my finalists but I'm waiting for some more information from the others before making that decision. April 1st is looming though.

Good luck to everyone :)

Does anyone know what the dress code is like for the admitted students' open house? I'm going to the one on Thursday and Friday and I don't want to be underdressed or anything

Withdrew my application; I hope some of y'all get my scholly money! I forgot that Alabama's deposit deadline was April 1st (a good deal earlier than for the other schools I was considering) and I feel incredibly guilty for forgetting that and emailing Dean Arrington so late (she's so nice :( ).

Anyways, best of luck to everyone attending! Tough decision for me; but Bama is a great school with what seems like a great group of people!

Has anyone else who has a full ride heard anything about FAFSA? Do we have to do it if we have a full ride?
