So, haven't posted on this thread before, but obviously tensions are creeping high. Now I'm just wondering how much hope we should have for JS1s for those that submitted late-late January? (Why did I do that hahahahaha) I'm basically starting to doubt my basic psychological disposition as I don't know why I applied for H so late in the cycle to screw myself over. I have a very good LSAT score and a GPA <25, but I feel like I put that splitter magic to waste.

Anyway -- any late Jan people heard back / others holding onto hope?

Last year the keychain had the now-abandoned law school crest on it so I was wondering what they would do instead. Sounds like they really upped the game...

Well they did it. It's worse than what I had pictured in my mind. It's got nothing on Stanford's moleskin.

I would have applied to Stanford if I had known about the moleskin.

NU gives out a shiny custom moleskine as well, AND there's a free pen. The extra pen really swayed me into applying to NU instead of SLS.

Submitted last week of January, asked them to hold my application until Feb LSAT scores came out, got a JS1 the day after my LSAT score came out (march 1). There's still hope!

Anyone notice that the updated Harvard Admissions Questions section says this about the admissions cycle "you could here anytime between September and May"

Do you think that means they're extending the admissions cycle from April 1st this year, or just anticipating that the cycle will be longer next year?

So...I was all set on Harvard, excited even, until I started filling out their financial aid form and it says something about them wanting to take 50% of your 401k. Now, as a non-traditional, older student that may be a deal breaker. Is this how most law schools work, wanting to take half your retirement savings?

Unless they changed their policy vis a vis admissions deadline literally in the last week, it's still April 1 (interviewer last week was explicit about this).

What?? That seems very unusual...especially because there's a not-insignificant penalty incurred on you for withdrawing from that. Unless they're willing to cover that penalty (at which point, why bother?)...

doesnt it mean that they factor in 50% of the value of your 401k in determining the total amount you have in assets available to contribute to your education?

Do they ask you to liquidate half your retirement savings and give it to them? I think you'll be able to take out the equivalent amount in loans right?

when you quit your job, you can rollover your 401k into an IRA and withdraw for educational expenses penalty-free. like the poster above said, I don't think you're required to pay your tuition with your 401k, but when you think about it, does it make a lot of sense to take out a loan with an interest rate that is equal to or higher than your average, long-term return on a 401k rather than just liquidating some of it? seems like you would end up saving money in the long run, especially if you got a job that allowed you to put in a lot more than you took out within a few years.

also, from reading Harvard's FAQs about their financial aid awards, it seems like its goal is not necessarily to make sure everyone has enough money as they need to comfortably pay tuition, but rather allocate the funds that the university has based on need. like they collect info on your assets and income in order to assess who needs a greater piece of the pie, so to speak. if someone can contradict this observation, that would be awesome.. I would love to be wrong about that, lol.

From their website (found when I was looking why they ask for parental income/assets when prospective students like myself have not received a dime from their parents for years, even though I'm under 30):

HLS Financial Aid website wrote:First, a resource assessment does not necessarily measure the ability of a family to make a contribution from current income alone. It is a relative measure of a given family’s financial strength when compared to all other families applying for the same pool of financial assistance in an academic year. In addition, a resource assessment should be more accurately thought of as a measure of an ability to finance the cost of education over time. It is an evaluation of not just a family’s current resources from present income earned, but also an evaluation of a family’s past resources in the form of the overall savings and investment levels achieved to date, as well as the family’s ability to borrow against the value of these resources relative to families who lack similar resources. Finally, we make no assumptions about how or whether a family will actually contribute the resources assessed in our determination of need. This is a personal and a highly individual decision. Some students may receive financial support from their families, while others may choose to borrow through education loans to meet the cost of attendance, with the intention of repaying those loans from future income.
