loooool. I would probably want to live in Cali if it wasn't for all of this ^ though COL is high in any major market.

Not Texas :)

Out of curiosity what laws are you referring to?

Having to pay 10 cents per bag at grocery stores.

Didn't even know this was a thing. Lol maybe I should google how bad Cali is

Another problem. UC Berkeley is incredibly intolerable. I wouldn't last a week.

Probably, lol. I'd consider myself quite liberal.

Being a Cali native, to me the weather does not offset the inability to be anything besides super-liberal, unless you turn a blind eye to politics completely (in an effort to stay sane) or you live in central California (San Joaquin Valley), south OC, or some parts of San Diego - all of these areas having more conservatives.

I'm assuming that's to encourage people to use reusable bags rather than plastic?

I think so. It's just annoying not having the option to use plastic bags or your own reusable bag, having to pay for them each time, and not being able to horde a bunch of plastic bags to use at home (I used them for my cat's litter before lol).

Yes of course. Berkeley has a Republican club, there are plenty of centrist and conservative students [met/even lived with several]. There is a very loud minority of extreme leftists that give Berks it's rep, but by and large most students at the university (of over 30k--come on it would be myopic to suggest everyone agrees to be a militant socialist) are too damned busy with school and 37 extracurriculars to scream at you about your politics.

However, I'm inclined to perpetuate the rumor that those who don't pledge their allegiance to Bernie Sanders are burned at the stake in Sproul Plaza for the sake of upping my odds of being admitted ;)

Haha obvi. I meant it's pretty easy to forget your reusable bag, or you might have to go buy something spontaneously, and then you get punished with having to buy new bags. And they're these hideous thick plastic bags that are a pain to keep in your house, unlike the old plastic bags which you could use for a lot of things as I mentioned before.

Oh, I thought you really didn't know. Haha. Yeah, but you'll get used to it. It for sure is annoying at first, but it'll become second nature. :) it's been like this in LA county for years so I get there needs to be a transition period. :)

Lol. I'm not worried about it. All I been saying is it's annoying and it just adds to the pile of dumb laws in Cali.

Sounds like you just need to buy some spare reusables that you can leave in the car in case you take a spontaneous trip! lol

LawSchoolTitan wrote:As a SoCal native who worked in SF for 6 months, just want to warn that the nice weather that everyone imagines in CA is actually a SoCal thing. The Bay Area gets some good days but has a fair share of cold, wet and foggy weather. (Granted it's not snowing, but when the city officially names their fog Karl, you know it is foggy a lot) So there is some literal truth to Mark Twain's statement, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."

Down in LA though... the life, weather and people are amazing. Being an 1 hour away from the beach, the mountains (where it does snow), the desert and Disneyland is an incredible lifestyle. Two days ago I was snowboarding and this morning I was surfing. Not many places can give you that haha

As someone who has lived in NorCal his entire life (besides 4 years in SoCal as a UG) I think you're exaggerating the weather. Given the drought, it's pretty rare we actually get wet weather in most of the Bay Area. SF is its own beast of course and generally runs colder, but the drought is the drought.

Even though this winter has been unusually cold, it hasn't gone below the 40s during the day. I would definitely stack up our weather against pretty much any region in the country. And personally I prefer that we have (small) seasonal changes compared to SoCal's endless summer weather.

And I'm obviously super biased but I think our quality of life can't be beast (CoL aside and the tech bro invasion). Yosemite, the Sierras, Mt. Tam, Point Reyes, Big Basin... pound for pound our outdoor opportunities are great. Plus I think the stereotypical SoCal attitude is real and couldn't stand living there long term. I'll concede on Disneyland though.

TLDR: BEAT LA! BEAT LA!

Man, it's going to be weird when I leave my California bubble.

Hey everyone, quick question about visiting Berkeley after being admitted. Will NYU pay for a plane/train ticket and/or hotel room for me? What about for my girlfriend or parents? Can I just email the admissions team and ask, or is that in bad taste? Anyone have any experience with this? I was admitted back in early December, if that matters.
