So I'm above the 75% LSAT but between the median and 25% GPA... Thoughts on writing a "Why Michigan?"

Hey I was in a similar boat (I actually was below the 25% percentile GPA though), and I think my "Why Michigan" essay really helped!

Remember that a big thing with Michigan is collegiality, so if you can maybe give an experience where you worked as a part of a team and tie it to wanting to attend the school, that could give you a boost.

How do you figure out stuff like "collegiality" being a big deal at a certain school?

I'd recommend googling "[insert law school name here] dean interview." You can find some good info about what is important at that school.

That's smart and also using TLS can be helpful too! For example, I'm actually going to Michigan right now.. So it's always good to have some secondhand sources.

Hi everyone, another 1L at Michigan. I echo what gsy said. I was in a similar boat (between 25th and 50th for GPA and above 75th LSAT) and applied kind of late in the game, and I think the Why Michigan was really helpful with getting in and getting $$$. My acceptance letter even had a comment about something I said in my Why Michigan. I strongly recommend writing one!

c/o 2020 summer starter here (I deferred for a year) - obv no way to know how much it mattered, but Dean Z referenced what I wrote about in my 'Why Michigan' in the little note she wrote on my acceptance letter as well. I do think it matters that you feel like you're a fit culturally at Michigan, for whatever reasons you think apply.

If you haven't read it, I HIGHLY recommend Dean Z's blog - I learned a lot about the school from it. Plus, she's pretty funny.

I'm in the same boat and curious as well. What way are you leaning?

If you have a legit reason, it won't hurt you.

But if I don't?

I mean I could find things about the school that I really like, but I don't have family in the area or know people who are alumni or anything like that.

It would basically be "here's what I want to get out of a legal education and here are stellar programs and resources you offer that would help me achieve that" or something like that.

I got one last year, but didn't get one this year; however, Mich. has a form on their site, and all I had to do was fill out some very basic information and send in my fee waiver email from last year to get a new one. It took about 24 hours to receive the waiver. Super simple, and as always, Michigan's staff is was awesome.

Huh, OK. Well none of this matters for me anyway because I had one 14/15 and didn't apply 15/16.

I got a beautiful packet in the mail today that was part of getting a fee waiver.

However, I still haven't gotten a status checker email, and I applied on September 1.

FWIW, I applied the day apps opened -- August 23rd -- and just got a status checker email a few days ago. My application isn't even complete yet. They seem to be moving pretty slow right now.

Also got a packet in the mail. Liked that it had a little note that was specific to me. Wasn't really sure how I felt about U Mich because I'm kind of over the whole college town thing after being at UNC for undergrad but, can't lie, that 100+ reasons booklet (or whatever you want to call it) kind of sold me on the school lol.
