Any advice on timeline is appreciated.

Interviews aren't necessary to be accepted at Columbia, right? Getting nervous because my stats are similar to you lucky guys that got a pick-me-up today (congrats, by the way!), but I didn't think my LSAT was high enough to get accepted without an interview :|
(Or did you all go complete in September? Because that would be a huge relief, let me tell you  )

Got an interview. Submitted the day after the applications opened.

176 LSAT, 3.5 GPA

Kinda nervous tho. I don't view it as a good thing necessarily. Now I'm all stressed out. Got into Michigan today, but I really want Columbia and hate the uncertainty.

Hey guys! Two quick questions:

1. According to their website, Columbia does not give further status updates online and they send final decisions by mail. Are updates (interview requests, etc) sent via email or regular mail? I'd assume email?

2. With respect to interviews, does anyone know what types of applicants Columbia interviews? One would assume they might pick people on the cusp of admissions, rather than people >75% for LSAT/GPA, for example. Do people have any knowledge of who gets interviewed?

I've read somewhere that Columbia interviews applicants that are on the cusp of admission (so like splitters or lower numbers) and applicants they are considering for scholarships.

Anyone know what are some typical questions they ask in the interview?

Also, do they usually ask "Why ___?" question even when you have supplied them with a Why essay?

I read this too but it was only from another poster here in TLS from last year. Although I am a splitter, I hope it's for a scholly!

Did anyone who is at like their medians get an interview request? and/or did anyone who applied in October get one?

I am barely above median GPA and between 25-50 for LSAT and didn't get one so I was wondering :?

Not quite your situation, but I'm GPA>75% and 25%<LSAT<50% and I got an interview request.

Haven't received an interview request, stats at or above both 75ths, applied early October. Looking at the admissions spreadsheet from last year, I can't see a clear pattern. I looked at people who got substantial scholarships (Butler, Hamilton), and it looks like some got interviews and some didn't. So we probably shouldn't read too much into it either way (or at least that's what I'm telling myself :D )

I'm just guessing they won't interview someone who they don't want to admit, so I would think that getting an interview isn't really a bad thing.

I'm a splitter and I got one, but I applied early September.

Wondering if Jill Nussbaum is doing the interviews?

Also, I would really appreciate it if anyone who is doing the interviews early on in the week shares in the thread or PMs me how the whole thing goes!

+1 I second that about people who do early interviews filling us in! Mine is toward the end of the time frame we were given, so I'm not much help.

mm2368 wrote:I just left an information session there and spoke more in depth with Asst. Director of adcom. I'm sorry if anything I write seems self-explanatory or obvious but I didn't know much about the process at all so I thought to share.

The process is much slower for them this year; they're looking to do more interviews (a trajectory they hope to maintain as they want to build up to interviewing all candidates in coming years, at least that's what she implied) though it will remain true that only a small % of applicants are interviewed. In other words, they are really taking their sweet a$$ time with applications this year.

They've not admitted anyone yet, and have sent very few interview requests out. The group drilled her today about reasons why people get interviews, and she said most often it is because there's a question about your application or something isn't clear; the second most common reason is that something about your app provoked them "usually in a good way". So I learned that, whereas a JS1 from Harvard is a great sign because nearly 70% of those interviewed get in, the same cannot be said of Columbia's interview process (again, you may have known this already so my bad).

For those who haven't applied yet, she was ADAMANT that an applicant not do anything gimmicky or too creative. In other words if you submitted an Elle Woods resume and video application you're not getting into Columbia! lol

Again that whole "We do a holistic review so don't let quantitative factors discourage you" - w-e.

Thanks for sharing. I interview on Tuesday. Wish me luck. Columbia is my #1.
