I was accepted more than 24 hours after the status change. It's not too unusual; just be patient. Expect to hear on day 10.

Well...got a PT invite so I'm checking in! They sure know what they're doing with that offer. Hadn't looked into them too much but with the waiver/PT there really isn't much of a reason not to.
Good luck everyone!

Anyone think it's a big negative to apply without a Why Duke essay? Or not that big of a deal?

My undergrad law school advisor just spoke with a Duke Adcom that said they care heavily about the Why Duke essay, so I wouldn't risk it.

I only have my own evidence to go on, two years ago didn't write one and got PT waitlist. This year wrote one and got in.
I say do it, it can probably be done and polished in an afternoon.

Depends. I didn't write one. Got in off PT, but then again, I am URM. So take it as you like. To be fair, I did try and write one but couldn't come up with anything sincere and thought writing one would hurt me.

My pre-law advisor even mentioned that the adcom didn't seem to care if the essay was generic. They viewed it more as showing an effort.

Did anyone receive two 7 reasons for Duke pamphlets in the mail? It seemed really tailored to my application with one about Business and another about Clerking. I was already accepted via PT, but thought this was a bit odd. Anyone else get this? Were yours the same as mine or also tailored to your app?
Also, definitely write the "Why Duke?" essay especially if you're PT because they'll WL you for YP otherwise. I've heard lots of applicants that were flat out rejected and who re-applied the next year and were accepted. With the only change being writing that essay.

I got the same pamphlet--one about entrepreneurship and the other about clerking. I don't think it's tailored to the app since I don't think anything about my interests screams entrepreneur lol.
Also, while I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from writing a "why duke," I'm pretty significantly over both 75ths, didn't write a "why duke," and got in PT. Plugging my numbers into myLSN, it looks like 90+% of people get in, so it doesn't look like they're doing much yield protection there. (By contrast, UVA's acceptance rate for this range is 40ish%, Michigan's is 60ish% (Both of which I did write "why x" essays for). Again, it probably can't hurt to write one, just thought I'd provide some more data.

Wow good points. I guess I just don't see why you couldn't tailor a Why X essay from a prior school for Duke. It takes max 30 mins and it can't hurt. But you guys are right maybe not if you're above both 75s by a lot, as I was. Especially since I don't think that PT counts for yield because it's "conditional acceptance" haha I think that's a technicality that lets them accept everyone who's above the 75s but if they turn them down for a better school or more money, then it's not like they "accepted" you since it was a conditional one.

Without saying specific numbers, my stats are very close to yours, and it wasn't an issue. I have no idea how the "conditional" acceptance thing plays out, but I do think you're right that a "why Duke" takes very little time and is probably worth the effort. Just because I was lazy doesn't mean others should be

Everyone always says those why x essays take like 30 min but for me it takes like four days!
FWIW I was at both medians didn't write a why duke and got in through PT, I think they do look at other qualities that they want to promote at their school...who knows.
I got that entrepreneur pamphlet too don't think it's customized but it's a great strategy they're doing getting people interested

I guess I take back my Why X argument. I honestly felt that if you had a Why X essay done, you could just adjust it quickly but maybe not...?
Also don't think the pamphlet thing is working now that I know they sent it to everyone - I appreciate a personal touch, not mass spamming.

I have not heard either. But at least now I know this is not my own idiosyncratic situation. Maybe we should call admissions tmr morning?

I was impressed by their clerkship numbers and learning about the venture start up clinic was cool. I guess I don't expect anything personal lol Their interchangeable one liner in the acceptance letter was good for me lol
Idk for me writing the why x essays were hard but I did it for my top three schools so I cared an awful lot, and Penns was pretty different than the other two. I'm about to write for two that I'm not as excited about which will probably be a lot shorter
