Received my letter and was awarded 15k less than what Cornell and Michigan offered me. Based on this and my savings, Duke would require me to take out $20K more in loans than Cornell and $40K more than Michigan. Dukes tuition is really high, 59K

Given how much they push their COA, being relatively low I was surprised when I looked at Michigan and Duke's COA calcs for loans and Michigan is actually like ~5k a year lower for out of state than Duke.

Duke estimated COA for a year $83,751
Michigan estimated COA for a year (OOS) $77,114 !

I'm kinda skeptical of that difference since Duke's tuition is only $700 higher and the rent is only a bit over half that of Michigan.

Wow texaseng we are on the same wave length I just came to post the info. These are both 16-17 numbers. Duke estimates room board to be 13.3, Michigan to be 14.2. HOWEVER michigans does not include health insurance but Duke does (2.5k)

There needs to be a new thread that compares all the schools

Just looked at it more in depth. There are definitely some really odd discrepancies.

Duke includes ~1700 for transportation
Duke includes ~2500 for medical insurance (Michigan will add in on request)
Duke's rent / etc is ~900 less than Michigan
Duke is additionally adding in ~1200 more for loan fees (I don't understand this at all? Why is Duke estimating so much more for loan fees?)

I think that 6300 above is essentially the difference between the 2. Looks like in all likelihood the COA would be almost identical.

Yeah, in general I don't like school estimated col, in any town save ny, san fran, dc you could make two cols match if you wanted. I would just look at the Scholly number and tuition, should be good enough for comparison

I was just going to echo this. As someone who has researched living options in both locations and knows people in both, my impression is that Durham is considerably cheaper for rent of similar type accommodations. Am I missing something?

No. The reason the COA calculator is higher at Duke is because the "extras" a poster pointed out above are used by Duke to help students get more loan money from the government if needed. By packing all that in there which is significantly more than COA, it helps students who might need an extra 5k one year for a medical emergency for example. Trust me, Duke's cost of living is ridiculously awesome. Essentially Duke wants to make sure people can get extra in loans in need be. For someone, that extra 5k might make the difference one year to pay for something completely unexpected if needed.

Was fortunate enough to get a much more generous scholarship than I probably deserved and will almost definitely be in Durham next year, can't wait to see some of y'all there!

Based on 2 whole weeks of data my assumptions are:

Each Tuesday, people who interviewed between the Tuesday and Monday of 1 month prior will have their scholarships mailed out. (IE on the 21, all of us the interviewed between 1/24 and 1/30 will get notifications).

These letters will arrive on Monday or Tuesday of the next week

I think it says when they start pulling from the PR in the PR email, but I'd guess it'd be May or June.

It doesn't say in the email unfortunately. I was wondering with Duke's PT app process as well as the relatively slower cycle, if they might pull people of PR earlier.

I got mine the next morning. All interview spots are full until March 17 or so.

Well that sucks. By that point it's basically time to start putting down seat deposits (slight hyperbole). How am I supposed to do any sort of negotiations if I don't get my initial offers until almost April
