I just sent in a Why UVA after being complete since November, and being UR since early December. Will this delay the process at all? Also, will it look bad that I waited until now to send in a Why UVA?

I'm pretty sure there is a gym within 10 minute walk of the law school - has a pool too! :D

Dope, thanks!!!

Is this really a thing? I've been with my GF 5+ years and was planning on taking her to some of these events. What's the issue?

What about FWB of 5 years+?

I mean, just to echo what chargers21 said, it has much less to do with labels and more to do with how established the relationship is. So, your 2 month Tinerina date, probably NAGL. Your GF/BF of 5 years--sure, why not.

Ultimately, law (whether rightly or wrongly) is a conservative career field and, by extension, law school is too...somewhat. Networking starts now and, if you SO is going to make you look better, I'd say "by all means bring them". If they are so new you hardly know each other...nah, be your own person.

Also, keep in mind these mixers are intended to allow you to meet and interact with those who will, one day, be your colleagues. So, if you bring a date and you spend the entire evening in your own two-person circle, that defeats the purpose. Now a 5-year relationship, or spouse/fiancé probably has the ability to be a social "self licking ice cream cone". A recent GF/BF who is going to hang on you all night and demand attention or validation or whatever is going to prevent you from putting you best foot forward.

Just some things to consider.

Good luck!

I think if the BF/GF will be accompanying you/following you/living with you for law school, it makes sense for them to come with you anyway.

Personal side note, my SO and I have been together for five years but we did the last 2.5 long distance. He's about to graduate from medical school and is interviewing for residency programs. They don't get to pick where they go, they are matched like sorority/fraternity matches. Now we're playing this game of law school/residency match and it's frustrating because obviously the advice is "don't follow someone you're not engaged/married to" but how could we move any further if he gets matched somewhere like Alabama where I don't want to go to law school? I'm stuck in that limbo right now.

Alum reception event is just a social network event. Even married couples can divorce. So bring whoever you feel comfortable with.

Got it, that makes sense. Just making sure there wasn't some taboo about it in and of itself.

Correct. Except it's more like three or four minutes. Live at Ivy and it's en route.

I have never heard someone use the sorority/fraternity match as a comparison to the residency match.

That is a tough limbo indeed. Lots of friends who were in that position and I can empathize with how nerve-wracking it is.

Does anyone know why UVA gives out fee waivers? I got one and I applied but looking at their school, it's a huge reach for me. So I'm thinking they want to reject me to boost their selectivity. Am I just being paranoid? I'm between their 25th and median lsat and right around their 25th gpa.

Sounds to me like you're within their numbers. Someone has to be the reason their 25ths are what they are. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! :)

Seconded. Law schools do offer fee waivers to increase their selectivity, but I wouldn't fear that unless you were significantly outside their range. Like I've heard of people with 16X getting "invitations to apply to Harvard" that's something I'd be skeptical of.

Idk, the Harvard invites for 16x might not be that crazy if the recipient is a URM. Numbers are down.

Thank you. Makes me feel a bit better. I've been UR since 12/2 too.

International applicant here. Submitted today. LSAT above 75th. Non-reportable GPA: Superior. But the ABA reports suggest internationals shouldn't get too optimistic about UVA.

Be forewarned...it's dangerous brotha!

I spent way too long contemplating the right groupings and inclusions/exclusions, and you can already see the villagers have grabbed their pitchforks and torches in the Northwestern thread (English and Comm grouped together??!!!)

I was an international student who attended with similar stats, though I was in-state and ED. I was admitted within 24 hours. I think in 2011 admission was a little more cutthroat than today.

Do you have anything that makes you stand out as an international applicant - hopefully that's made very clear in your PS. Also, I'd suggest why X statements for every school you apply to - find a way to tie your international experience to something unique about the school.
