Submitted 10/27. UR 10/28 then............ nothing. I should have made a Why UVA? However, when I applied I hadn't yet fallen in love with the school like I have since. 4.0, 170. If I don't get in, let that be a warning for y'all people in the future searching this old thread.

A Why UVA might not have helped anyway. I wrote one and visited the campus but got that cold, cold YP WL nonetheless.

Hi, UVA person, I have your law school in my top 3 for future attendance and have been accepted at the other two. I am making plans do tour the three schools and time and money have, unfortunately, become an issue. I do not mean to be demanding but I very much would like to visit UVA Law School on my upcoming trip in March but obviously do not want to be presumptive in paying to get from the NY to VA if I am not admitted. My LSAT and GPA numbers are above your current 75th percentiles and, though I understand the fluid nature of admissions, I think my interest in your school is matched by my potential candidacy for admission. Thank you for taking the time to help me with this matter. If I can be of any further assistance in this process please call me at: xxx-xxx-xxxx.

Regards,
You

Or, you know, just wait.

I assume you're also against standing outside the admissions office with a boombox playing Peter Gabriel? You guys are zero fun.

I just submitted and I wrote a "why UVA" now yall are making me second guess myself haha. I'm a pretty generic median candidate though...hoping the Why UVA helps demonstrate how much I like the school (spoiler: I really like it).

May have been answered before, but for non-Dillard folk if there's no other scholarship information along with the admissiob packet can we assume we're headed towards paying sticker? I feel like I've read about people getting offered 60k but I may be confusing that with another school that's already dealt out decisions.

Their website says that they do the bulk of their scholarship work between now and March, I believe.

Sort of in the same boat. Applied back in October, went UR2, haven't heard a thing. Over both 75ths, but not to such a degree that I figured I would be an immediate YP WL.

If nothing else, the silence is kind of annoying. UVA seems to be all over the place in terms of their admissions decisions and timelines - admitting people with very high numbers and giving them full rides a few days after they apply (some of those applying in Nov/Dec), radio silence for other people with similar numbers who applied earlier or even at the same time.

I *understand* why admissions committees would want to strategically ice people out or waitlist them to maximize matriculation rates, but IMO if you are otherwise qualified for admission to a school, demonstrate interest, and apply for admission....the school should admit you?

No, for two reasons. The first as you know is yield protection. It hurts the school to admit someone who doesn't attend. Perhaps the other person with similar numbers had an attachment to UVA, e.g. looking to be a double hoo, are in-state, or had a compelling why UVA.

Secondly, the elite schools are not just about numbers even if they are by far the highest predictor of admission. They still want to build a diverse class. Perhaps the person with the same numbers is foreign educated, has spent years working on the hill, or did teach for America in an urban school for three years. What else do you bring to the table that makes you stand out to the admissions team? Are your other strengths clearly communicated on your application?

I see a lot of people with high numbers who don't get in just assume that they are YP. I think TLS overinflates the importance of high numbers at the T14. I think that while it definitely helps, it doesn't guarantee you acceptance anywhere.

Maybe I should have been clearer, this isn't me being salty about my not hearing back from UVA - nor do I have any concerns about my application. I'm all for denying people with high numbers who otherwise don't bring much to the table.

It's really more of a fundamental problem I have with the idea of YP'ing anyone. I don't disagree with you as to the why UVA decides to yield protect (assuming that YP is ACTUALLY something they intentionally do, they don't just draw names from a hat, etc.), I just just think the practice as a whole places a higher value on protecting the reputation of the institution rather providing a legal education to qualified applicants.

I think what they are saying, at least in part, is that "acceptance rate" should not have any weight in USNWR's ranking system. It shouldn't hurt UVA to accept all 200-odd students who are going to Y this cycle. They are going to Yale! They should have the option to go to Virginia if they want to.

I don't know what to do with my hands right now and any productivity at work has been destroyed. Holy shit.

Put another way: "high numbers" are necessary but not sufficient for T14 admission. :D

YP is still a thing tho...
