I had an informational interview with an ad com member there in September and she confirmed what kkdk had said earlier in this thread: if you're admitted late there is basically zero chance you'll be considered for RTK. The ad com person said "if you're not admitted by March" there's no hope. I did not clarify as to whether it means "before March 1" or "before March 31", but I'm guessing the former.

TITCR. It isn't ideal, I'll admit. But given how the general cycle plays out, we need to know who our interviewees are at least a couple of weeks before the interviews, so we can handle logistics effectively/efficiently. We also have to get interview panels ready (you interview with about 6 people at a time, and many are alums, professors, scholarship sponsors with tight schedules (Part of my scholarship is funded by Sullivan and Cromwell and the partner there insists on interviewing). So accommodating all of these things, not to mention the fact that so late in the cycle, Root offerees are making decisions between RTK and Rubies, RTK and Yale, RTK and Darrow, etc. I know at least one offeree that decided between the Root and not going to law school that year, too (they picked the latter, btw, and are now at Harvard) Taking all of that into account, we just have to pick a date after which we don't consider applicants.

Not sure if you have insight to this, but would you say that this general sentiment/procedure would apply for all named scholarships as well? Thanks for answering questions![/quote]

I can only speak to the RTK. The Latinx Rights Scholarship, IILJ, Furman Public Policy, all have their own special criteria. Is there overlap? Sure. When we see an application that may also be a good fit for these other scholarships, we make a note and that application usually gets sent to those committees but after that we don't have input. This happens even if the applicant didn't apply for that scholarship per se. This is why many interviewees have BOTH their IILJ and RTK interview on that same ASW. Most of the time they applied to both, but sometimes not. All public interest scholarships are under one larger umbrella at NYU, so allowing committees to refer applicants ensures that you don't miss out on a scholly you deserved just because you didn't tick all the boxes on the application. I have no idea how many we refer like that, or whether it makes a difference.

Hey-- thanks for answering Qs. If we hear back from admissions after RTK review starts, is our app still considered? i.e. if we receive an acceptance from NYU mid-Feb for example, does our RTK app still make it to the scholarship review phase or is there a date cut-off for program consideration?

Check my posts, I think I've answered this elsewhere! Basic answer is if you get accepted before invites go out, there's a chance we read it. After invites, basically zero chance.

As you read applications do you keep people updated on whether they're still in the running or not? Like people who get cut after round 1- do they get an email letting them know or does everyone have to wait until after interview invites are sent to know?

We send out invites in one go, I believe (85% confident), and once invitees accept, we send out notifications to candidates to whom we weren't able to offer an interview spot. This avoids the awkwardness if telling you you're out, and then having a bunch of invitees declining to interview, and us having open spots with 'rejected' candidates now eligible for an interview.

KKdk, I'm an RTK hopeful and was wondering if you had any insight about when we could expect to hear back about interviews? Aside from the generic February - mid-March that's posted on the website. Thanks!!

Applications are being read very, very, very, soon. Before end of this month. They will continue to get read till we get through all of them, and I suppose you can expect invites to go out late February, early March. The reason why it's vague is because we are never sure how many tiebreaks we have to do in Round 1, and after reading the hundreds of applications we get, we still have to send out about 60-70 invites. Making that call is very tough.

I can safely say that for the next 3 weeks, you won't hear from us.

Thank you for the quick reply! That makes sense...I'm glad you read them carefully, I'm just excited/hopeful/impatient! Of the folks who apply, are there many with significant demonstrated PI interest/experience who don't get interviews? I feel like my resume (both in terms of work experience and "extracurricular" commitments outside of work) is pretty solid, but don't want to get my hopes up if the competition is fierce.

Hard to say. We're making a >50% cut in the first go, so yes, people with significant experience are just statistically speaking going to be cut in Round 1. Commitment, consistency, level of responsibility you took on, are all important factors. Compelling personal narratives also play a role. Diversity plays a big role, in a more nuanced fashion than URM box-ticking. Sometimes, lack of experience because you're K-JD can be compensated by work in school, or coursework, or even grades. By and large, most Roots have post-grad experience of some kind, that also linked to significant work during school, and those that are K-JD, did a significant amount of work during school. If you think you have significant PI interest, you have a good shot at an interview. But competition is tough, I won't lie. But everyone gets a fair shake.

Good to know--I will try to tamp down my expectations a bit. :) Also, does GPA/LSAT or academic history play a role at all in determining who gets an interview? Thank you, again, for answering all of our questions--I really appreciate it!!

Just did a cursory review since December and it really does hold up that Tuesday is the day for DLS. I propose that we just not bump this thread until the 31st lol

I maintain this was a glitch in the system and all those DLS updates were supposed to come out on tuesday

Is there a way to know whether you're UR1 or UR2, or do you have to just recognize the date change?

This gives me hope, although I'm UR1 before you by a couple of weeks and still waiting. Question: did you apply for one of the named scholarships? My hypothesis is that they went through the people who did so their applications could be forwarded on the committees that decide those if appropriate and are now getting around to the people who didn't apply for them.

Didnt apply for any scholarships, so maybe youre right. In fact, I really hope you are because the silence this cycle, especially from NYU, is killing me!

If it matters at all, my numbers are both between 50 and 75.

Anybody know what the fastest turn around time between ur2 and DLS could be, or at least what the average time is?

I don't think we have enough info to figure out average times. There are some people who have gone DLS really quick (within 1 week - the first wave after their UR2 date) and some people who've been UR2 since November with no response since.

is it a bad sign if you haven't gone UR2? I submitted in mid September and my status checker hasn't been updated since mid October

I have a somewhat new address and I completely forgot my street number in a moment of stupidity. I actually just used the NYU status checker to confirm.

...At least it's helping me somehow...
