Re: Columbia Reserve
Here's a humdinger for y'all:
Michigan has this option if you end up on their waitlist, to defer to 2009 and automatically (with a good excuse) get a spot in next year's class. I just joined Columbia's reserve and I'm 100% going to defer to 2009 if I get in. How do you think they would react if I told them about my plans for deferral? I have a very good excuse that would plump up my soft factors like an October turkey, and I'd totally be willing to make it binding and I'd withdraw from all other schools and not reapply anywhere in the next cycle. Best case scenario, they emulate Michigan and give me a spot in their 2009 class. Worst case scenario, they could get PISSED and kick me off the waitlist and be like, "try again next cycle, ass" or even worse they could me like "no" and toss my application in the trash and make me wait until may to find out I've been dinged. Oh fuckin hell, maybe I can call anonymously? All thoughts are very much appreciated.
EDIT: Here's what Columbia says about deferring admission:
"Deferred Admission
An applicant who wishes to defer registration for one or two years should submit his or her request, in writing, to the Dean of Admissions after having been offered admission, but no later than July 1. This request should include a general statement explaining how the intervening time will be spent. Permission for such deferment is generally granted."
So it's not looking good. Maybe I will ask in person when I find myself in NYC come March.

Whoops, guess I was in the wrong thread. (The "hold" one).
Got the Reserve letter today. It came in a cream envelope; I got all excited!

Why is Columbia being so weird this year? Looking at Law School Numbers it seems like they are deferring a ton of people who would definitely have gotten in during past cycles.

Re: Columbia Reserve
frazz-
The speculation (that's all we have, of course) is that they're 1. trying to make a move up into the #4 spot again by a good margin, and/or 2. they're especially worried about their yield rate because they kind of took a beating last year on that, so they're making applicants jump through more hoops and wait longer to see who REALLY wants in.
The truth is probably some combination of the above, with some other random weirdness thrown in for good measure.

Re: Columbia Reserve
I thought if you were accepted form a waitlist or reserve a deferral was not an option if they ultimately accepted u

I can't find my Columbia 'you're on hold' letter. Does anyone remember when they said decisions for that group would be sent?

I was put on as well and have been sending them one postcard per week for the last month. I hope this doesn't backfire...

Well, this should make you all happy - pretty sure that I have that Columbia waitlist letter in the mail and pretty sure that I'm going to drop off and accept a half-ride at Gtown. I like DC better anyway and I'm tired of playing admissions games.

Damn! Reject both options! Go to Vanderbilt or UVA or something. Just not those two schools.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
