Georgia mentioned in the tuition equalizer email that they would start sending out merit scholarship information the week of 2/15 so I'm curious to see if more people have gotten this info.

Would it be in bad form to shoot them an email asking about this?

Thanks!

Also wondering this. Have gotten no word on $$$ from UGA or GSU, but have gotten schollies from all the other schools I applied to. Maybe it's a Georgia thing lol

I know there are some UGA undergrads here as well as some law grads/students. Can anyone comment on the $10,000 that the law school lists for expenses (excluding tuition, fees, and healthcare)? Is it really feasible to pay for housing, utilities (water, electricity, internet, cell phone), and food on $10,000 or is that an ultra-low budget? What do you think are the best ways to be around that mark as a law student?

Some of the cheapest housing anywhere. You can easily get a nice place for 300-400 a month if you're willing to have a roommate.

I've found some places like that in Decatur/Stone Mountain in Atlanta, but that doesn't include utilities. Does that include utilities/internet? That is incredible if so! Especially if it's possible to live there without a car. I think what frustrates me with looking at apartments online is that for most cities the rent for the entire apartment is listed so you just divide by however many bedrooms there are, but Athens is random. Sometimes it does it the normal way, but other times it will have the individual rent listed instead. I have no idea which is which.

It seems that $12,000 for UGA would be a very comfortable budget if you're willing to have a roommate, possibly even solo.

In Athens, most places don't include utilities/internet within the rent. Only the newer, bigger complexes like the Standard downtown (which runs over $600 a bedroom) includes utilities. 300-400 in Athens would definitely require a roommate, but also it isn't going to be the nicest living conditions if you're looking to not use your car.

Went to undergrad here..
The cheap housing is going to be a 10-15 minute drive from the law school. I lived right around the corner from down town with 2 roommates and paid about $600 each including utilities.
Even with the cheapest housing in athens I don't think its realistic to expect to only spend $10,000 on living expenses for an entire year. I also don't think $12,000 would make a "very comfortable" budget but if you don't plan on spending money on anything other than rent, gas, and groceries all year long than maybe it can work for you!
The cheaper your rent the farther your drive and Athens traffic can actually be a nightmare and turn a 10 minute drive into a 30 minute drive pretty easily. You also need to keep in mind that even the apartments that seem like a walkable distance may not have a SAFE walk or even a non-muddy walk so you may end up driving anyway no matter how close you think your apartment is.
If anyone has any questions you can PM me!

edit: if you actually live downtown downtown you definitely won't be driving.

Question for current UGA students:

How "Southern" is UGA? Would you say the majority of the students are from the south? Am I in for a culture shock? Do people generally hate on those "damn Yankees"?

For reference I am from Southern California and went to a small liberal arts college in the North East.

Thanks!

I was born in Jersey and spent 10 years in Boston before attending UGA, and it hasn't been a problem - I've gotten zero hate for being a Yankee.

Learn to at least tolerate (or better yet, love) college football.

People move a little slower down here than they do in the NE.

You'd be surprised at how useful a word "y'all" actually is.

Do have a good reason for "why do you want to stay in Georgia" during OCI, though.

Good luck!

Thanks!

This is good to hear. My parents/ in-laws are in the South now, so I think I've got a pretty legitimate reason for staying should I end up in Georgia.

Complete 3/4, Acceptance this morning as of 3/5. Just curious if anyone else heard about scholarships or financial aid upon acceptance, or if this information comes later?

I was accepted in January and still haven't heard anything about scholarship. Is anyone in the same boat?

Side note: Who is attending the ASW at the end of this month?

So, I just received like 4 emails from UGA about different admitted students' related things. However, I was placed on the waitlist a month ago. Does this mean I'm in off the waitlist?? Or is this just an error?

I was in the same boat. I emailed them and was informed that I was not selected for a scholarship, but that they were going to be doing another round of schollies later this month.

Waitlisted as well. Has you received your waitlist letter? It's been 9 days since my status changed online, but I have yet to receive my letter.
