gtg, thanks for posting! That's very interesting -did you get that via email? I haven't received it, but I haven't logged onto the admitted students site or anything recently.

I'm glad that he addressed the issue, since it was such a precipitous drop. It was interesting to hear his analysis of it. Given the small numbers of the class, I can see how a few unlucky folks can really skew the numbers. Also, this quote kind of scared me, but what are you gonna do...

How can you, as students, help? You can support the Class Gift program. Financial support for the School is a component of the U.S. News rankings. Be a spokesperson for the law school; positive word-of-mouth (reputation among lawyers and judges) is important in your job search and career satisfaction and an element of the rankings. Work with us in looking for pre- and post-graduation positions. Stay in touch with the Career Services Office; keep them informed of jobs you attain, within law and without law, so that you can be accurately counted in our placement statistics. Even part-time work can help our numbers. Study hard for the bar exam. Nothing is better for employment success in law than success on the bar examination, as the Class of 2007’s experience demonstrates. If you need help, financial or otherwise, let us know.

Not that I think it's good for any school's policies and priorities to be driven in any great part by the yearly antics of one overrated muckraking news rag. But this seems awfully heavy on, "It's not me, it's you."

Not that I think it's good for any school's policies and priorities to be driven in any great part by the yearly antics of one overrated muckraking news rag. But this seems awfully heavy on, "It's not me, it's you."

That's a little unfair. They spent most of the letter explaining why it happened and what they were doing to fix it. This was just a paragraph that was basically saying "if you want to boost ratings, don't waste your time bugging us. Instead there are things you can do to help."

sockpuppet, i feel the same as you. that was definitely a very odd paragraph. the dean (as well as many at many other law schools) probably want to give a 'fuck you' the us news rankings, & they may downplay the importance of the rankings (which they should), but i guess its impossible to not play the game

Thanks for posting that gtg263r! I found that extremeley helpful and interesting. I agree that the first part of the paragraph "in question" struck me as odd (um, I don't have money to donate yet) but the rest of it seemed fairly comprehensive. A school isn't miraculously going to be on the rise without it's students working hard in those areas in question as well. And in the context of the entire letter, in which the school takes responsibilty for what happened and outlines how they plan to change it, I didn't find it to be outrageous that he would say those things. As the writer of that blog said, hopefully this drop will lead to a focus on certain weak points at UCD and make our experience (class of 2011) an even better one.

When I called yesterday they said the electronic deposit system would be available in a day or two - let's hope that is what is going on.

That mid-January thing is what it said before the admitted students site was created, from about December to early February.

They seem to have reverted.

It depends on finanacial aid. I'm leaning Hastings because it would be much better for quality of life, neither my fiance nor I would have a major commute, etc. But for some reason they didn't give me any grant money at all. Once I get the Davis official offer, I'll make my final decision. If it's going to cost $50K less to go to Davis, I might end up there.

I would guess that they're going to send us information on how to access that site, hopefully by e-mail.
