According to the website https://www.brooklaw.edu/Admissions/fin ... dance.aspx?

$1795 per credit. All J.D. students must successfully complete at least 85 credits. Full-time students enroll in 30 credits for their first year and 55 credits over their following two years. Part-time students enroll in 23 credits for their first year and 62 credits over their following three years.

Saw the "per credit" part but not the year breakdowns which is what I wanted. Thanks! Still have to do math and add in all the fees but I have a general idea now!

I received the email yesterday around 4pm telling me to check BLS Connect. I received the $28k/year scholly, which is nice but it's not enough considering tuition is around $50k. I'll probably try to negotiate it though. I really don't want to pay anything more than $15k.

Was admitted last Thursday, but still haven't received any scholarship information. Do you think that means I don't qualify for scholarships/ or does anyone have the same issue?

The acceptance email didn't say anything about a scholarship, but the letter I got in the mail said I was being considered. I got in about a month ago and scholarships were just awarded this week though. Look here: http://brooklyn.lawschoolnumbers.com/ to compare your numbers with others who have received scholarships so you can get an idea where you stand.

I'm a current 1L, hope I can clear up some of the worrying about scholarships. They don't send scholarship packages with acceptances. Instead, mine came about a month after my acceptance.

That being said, disregard the scholarship information on this website, it is still outdated from the old scholarship setup. Starting last year, they did away with their old stipulation system and applied a flat requirement for all scholarships, which only requires that you stay in the top 80% to retain your scholly in full. For my cycle at least, that was the most generous stipulation I received. Hope that helps calm some of the nerves haha.

I know you didn't invite questions but it seems like there is a lack of info on here about BLS. What has your experience been like so far? I saw that the admitted student even is being held at Skadden. That's a pretty powerful way to encourage those interested in BigLaw that BLS is serious. But the employment numbers paint a bit of a different picture. What has your experience been as far as BLS in relation to other schools and the reputation it carries in NYC. Thanks for the time!

Well I didn't receive a scholarship email or update, so I guess I didn't qualify for any which is a real bummer. Maybe I'll get lucky later in the cycle? However I did get an email today regarding grants I assume. Looks like I'll have an update to my award letter tomorrow. Hooray for being poor!

Same here. Emailed the dean and she said I met the criteria for admission but not scholarship :( hoping when people withdraw it'll free up some money. However, I filled out my fafsa and need access last week. Anyone know when we should hear back? What was the email you received about fin aid?

I filled out my FAFSA and Need Access Form several weeks ago, and received an email yesterday telling me to check my financial aid profile for a change in my award letter. Today it reflects the results of my grant award and loan. If I don't receive any merit scholarship however I'll probably withdraw.

I withdrew yesterday and today they sent me an email saying I had received another merit scholarship. I wonder if this is their negotiation strategy? The second scholarship makes their offer pretty substantial.

It's absolutely their negotiation strategy and has been for several years, at least.

Anecdotally (my experience, plus that of many friends), they'll also match any of the local schools if you negotiate well. I know someone who says she used Cardozo as a stalking horse, basically. She hated Cardozo when she visited and had no intention of attending, but she used the $33k offer from BLS to get Cardozo to increase their scholly offer to full tuition, then she e-mailed BLS and said Cardozo was offering full tuition her and unless they could match it, she may have to withdraw. BLS came back with more than $50k.

The discrepency in rankings relative to the two schools is only getting larger, and if Brooklyn takes another hit the schools will arguably be in different leagues. I feel like Cardozo is going to start telling potential students who use Brooklyn as leverage for an increase in scholly $$ to piss off. I'm almost considering using my Cardozo offer, which is only slightly less than BK's, as leverage to further increase my money at Brooklyn, and then possibly hitting up Cardozo. Genius or stupid?

Possibly, though for now at least the employers I've spoken with seem to see BLS and Cardozo as fairly interchangeable.

That's what my friend did, basically, but in reverse. But I'd probably do it this way - Use BLS to get Cardozo to increase, then use Cardozo to get BLS to increase, then go back to Cardozo, then back to BLS, and so on, until both offers are virtually identical. I think you'll probably have more leverage with Cardozo first because you've got a 'better' offer in hand, albeit from a lower ranked school.

The other thing to do is just ride the process until seat deposits come due. It sucks for people on the waitlist, but BLS has a history of upping offers without prompting as the first deadline approaches. Also, at least in my year (current 2L), a lot of people said that they tried negotiating early and had no luck only to see BLS throwing money around as seat deposit deadlines approached and passed.
CaveCanem wrote:Does a SJU full scholarship hold any weight to BLS? My Doza offer is slightly less than BLS so I'm a bit stuck with BLS. Waiting on Fordham as well. Would a fordham without $ hold any weight to BLS? Also have RU at just about full and seton hall at 15k FWIW.

Use the BLS offer to get Dozo up, then turn around and use Dozo to get BLS up. Never think you're "stuck" with what you're offered. You may not have much success this early, but keep asking for more and don't deposit until the last possible moment.

Assuming SJU is St. Johns, I think it holds weight to BLS; I didn't apply to St. Johns so can't say anything about my personal experience with that, but IIRC I know one person who had been planning to attend St Johns, withdrew and in the e-mail said as much, then got a matched offer. I can't remember which class year, though. Similarly, use Seton Hall and RU (Rutgers?). Basically, you want to let them know that other schools want you and that while you'd love to attend, you do have more generous offers on the table and could they maybe sweeten the pot. With respect to Fordham with no $, there I think you'd emphasize placement numbers, ranking, etc.

I'm pretty sure there's a how-to-negotiate-your-scholarship thread somewhere out there. It's worth a read.

The big thing I want to emphasize, though, is that whatever you do, don't accept your first offer from BLS (or anywhere, really) without at least trying to negotiate.

Even if their first offer is full tuition, it's worth pushing for more-than-full (my year, I think the max offer was $53k, back when tuition was $49.5k/year. I don't know if any of the current 1Ls have more than full tuition and, frankly, don't know much about how the per-credit pricing has altered scholarships) and guaranteed housing for 3 years, if you want to live in campus housing,* or whatever you can think of, really.

Ask for what you want in a polite, appropriate manner. The worst thing that happens is they say no.

*BLS guarantees housing for 1L. After 1L and 2L you do a housing lottery, and preference goes first to rising 3Ls, then incoming 1Ls, then rising 2Ls, so a fair number of rising 2Ls ended up moving last year. That may change this year, because last year was also the year they sold a bunch of buildings so there were a lot more people living in campus housing when the lottery happened, but hey. Also, the top 5% of the class as of the end of the fall semester is lottery-exempt. That said, even people who "lost" the lottery ended up getting housing if they pushed for it, though they did have to move apartments.

I just got an updated scholarship to full tuition yesterday, making BLS one of my top choices. I want to live on-campus, any chance with negotiating they'll give me more for housing? I was accepted to higher ranked schools but the prospect of going to school debt free is really enticing.

Also, how do you feel about the school atmosphere/ classes/reputation? Do you feel you have good internship opportunities for your 1L summer and are you confident in being employed after graduation?

Did you ask for an increase or was it unsolicited?

I was initially offered $28k then given an unsolicited increase to $53k

It can't hurt to ask, but I'd probably wait until a bit later in the cycle, especially if you've got other offers. I feel like you're always better off with more bargaining chips and other offers and time to fill the class running out are both pretty decent chips to play with.

As to atmosphere/classes/reputation...

I'm really, really happy here. I like the people, love my professors, and have only really had one class that was just sort of 'meh.' It wasn't bad, just not awesome.

Everyone I know got 1L summer internships/jobs last year- those are fairly easy to come by as you're working for free. Whether you end up working at Legal Aid or Skadden will depend largely on how much you hustle, I think. Most of my friends in this year's crop of 1Ls have jobs lined up this summer, many of them well paid. I'm not sure if this years 1Ls are doing better than last year's at finding solid summer jobs or if my 1L friends are more on-the-ball than my class of 2015 friends were last year, but they seem to be getting *better* jobs than my year did. That's entirely anecdotal, though.

Some 2Ls are still looking for this summer, some got SA jobs through OCI, some got jobs elsewhere. I think how 2Ls fare is a combination of grades, networking, hustle, interest, and luck.

I'm very confident in being employed after graduation, but I'm also in the top of my class with a summer associate job lined up. I know a few 2Ls below median who are starting to freak out. At this point, most of my 3L friends have jobs lined up, though not necessarily their first choice jobs and not, for most of them, Big Law. I know a few people with clerkships lined up and no idea what they're doing after that. I also know 3Ls - mostly median or below - who don't have jobs, and they're pretty freaked out about it.

That said, take this with a grain of salt and look at actual numbers. My sample size is small and anecdotal, and it's probably highly skewed because it's all coming from people I'm friends with, and I tend to think my friends are pretty awesome compared to the rest of the BLS population.

TL;DR: I'm really, really happy at BLS, really glad I decided against transferring after 1L, and feel good about my prospects but I recognize that anecdotal evidence is anecdotal so don't make choices based solely on anything I say.

In my year, I know, they basically said "if your LSAT is below our desired median, no money for you, if it's at or above it, please let us buy you." Then May came and I think they started offering $ to people who were a point or so below the targeted median.

So it may, but may not.

Sorry for the slow response! As a 1L it is hard for me to really give you a great answer about what employers are thinking when they look across the table at an interviewee from BLS, but I'll do my best to help you out.

1) I know you may get sick of hearing this, but regardless of where you end up, grades are going to be HUGE at getting you into BigLaw, it's just the reality of the economy. Get good grades.

2) BLS has a ton of successful alumnus in V100 firms, and they seem eager to mentor/help out younger students. I think if you can secure great grades and be personable (two things that aren't easy for everyone) you are looking at a solid opportunity to land employment with a great firm.

3) Network your ass off by getting involved with student orgs early. Career Services office is great, but you gotta make your own connections sometimes. By being friendly and showing a speaker/alum that you are genuinely interested in their practice when they come for a student organization event will pay off immensely in the long run. As a 1L, I've had two BigLaw interviews for summer interships. Rejected from one, waiting on the other, but that's to say that there are possibilities out there if you work for it.

Now, I think the gap between Cardozo and BLS has been blown way out of proportion on this board. Cardozo is a much younger school with a shallower alumni pool to make connections with, so don't forget to consider that. Sure, you're not at NYU/Columbia/Fordham, but with strong grades I honestly feel that BLS has put me in a great position to obtain strong employment.

The professors are fantastic, that is something that has been said that I can 100% agree with.
