Re: Splitters 2013-2014
3.45/172, applied in late November to every school.
Accepted to GW, NYU, and Berkeley.
Waiting to hear back from the rest of the T-14 (minus Yale), UCLA, and Fordham.
No waitlists or dings yet.
I'm a splitter because I had no direction/goals when I got to college. I worked my ass off in high school to get accepted to an Ivy, but once I was in I had no clue what I actually wanted to do with my education and had no motivation to study hard since it was ingrained in me that all I had to do was get into a top tier undergrad and I'd be set for life. I also started partying and being a lot more social than I ever was in high school (joined a fraternity, etc.) which also negatively impacted my GPA. Once I realized my interest in law and pursuing a career in it, GPA hasn't dipped below a 3.5. Would probably be sitting at a 3.6x if it weren't for that first year of college, but it is what it is.

nvm, just checked out your profile. Similar GPA, did you write an addendum for each school? Submitted to many of the same schools as you.

I did not write an addendum because I felt it was unnecessary since my GPA was the result of immaturity.aesth24 wrote:

Re: Splitters 2013-2014
3.57 / 177
All applications submitted 9/18, most complete Octoberish.
Accepted:
Duke
Georgetown
Berkeley
NYU
UCLA
Columbia
Still Waiting:
Harvard
Stanford
I wrote a WhyLawSchoolX statement for Berkeley, which was/is my first choice, but I didn't write any addenda or optional essays for any other schools. I took a risk with my personal statement topic, writing about a somewhat controversial political issue that is very important to me and also demonstrates why I am interested in law. I think that really paid off, actually. I'm a politics nerd, so I say... never listen to the stay-away-from politics advice!
I did not write or even really consider writing a GPA addendum. While my GPA may be "low" for some law schools, I think it's too high to apologize for. Plus, I am proud of my undergraduate record -- B's and all. So it didn't feel right to me to write one.
EDIT: To update.

Re: Splitters 2013-2014
Long-time lurker, first-time poster. Having a pretty good cycle so far, but I'm incredibly nervous about merit aid and taking on law school debt. I applied very broadly to maximize potential for scholarship negotiation.

I'm a splitter because... I was basically young and stupid during UG. Slacked off and skipped classes etc. In retrospect I really would have benefited from taking a year or two off to work prior to heading to UG. My PS dealt rather extensively with my growth and personal development post-UG and how my experiences shaped my desire to go to law school. Subsequently I did not feel the need to address the GPA in an addendum.

...or maybe schools mean it when they say they look at applicants holistically, with GPA/LSAT not solely dispositive....*

Mild splitter, 170/3.5x
In (chronological order of acceptance):
Duke
UCLA
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Michigan
No response yet (alphabetical):
Berkeley
Chicago
Cornell
Harvard (yeah, not a good shot)
NYU
Northwestern (still need to interview, so understandable)
Pennsylvania
Virginia
Kind of worrisome that I didn't hear back in the UC and NYU waves today, but I'm still being hopeful until I get the WL/ding.

I hear you. I'm trying to stay positive too, even though it's hard watching everyone else celebrate riding the waves. A little love from more schools would dramatically help my production of good vibes.Serett wrote:Mild splitter, 170/3.5x
