I wonder how competitive it is with all the older students with kids and stuff. I'm planning on studying 24/7 lolzz

I've heard it's pretty collegial environment compared to other schools, how that plays into study habits/time spent studying I have no idea.

Are you from utah? Seems like there's a lot of byu undergrads. A little strange.

I did my undergrad at the u. Does it look bad to have both degrees from the same place?

I doubt it.
Curious why you think it might look bad?

It does for academia like phd programs and stuff. I guess you are supposed to broaden your perspective by going to different academic environments.

Re: Utah c/o 2017 Applicants
I can see that. I guess it depends on what you want to do long-term. But I have a hard time thinking that if you had a very successful career as an attorney that, that wouldn't help outweigh the fact that you did undergrad and law at the same institution. I understand it's obviously important, but it seems that actual work experiences and career achievements, etc. would have just as much weight in getting yourself into something like academia later, especially at a regional or lower T1 type schools.
I think the typical academia assumptions play more of a role if you wanted to do academia at the T-14, then you better go to YHS.
But what do we know we're 0Ls

No but I sure as hell hope they bump me. I got a full ride from asu so I don't see the problem.

Got the call today...I was expecting a nice chunk of change given a law school in the middle of a CONSTRUCTION ZONE, but all they offered was the standard...Arizona here is COME!....Utah is in my rear view mirror once and for all!

I feel you man. It was hard for me to turn down full at asu, but being from utah it will probably still be cheaper here for me. Still it is fruatrating. Have to hand it to the dean though he is good at answering calls and talking to applicants to smooth things over. He always calls me back when I email the office. He probably thinks I'm buggin lolmagnuswalton wrote:Got the call today...I was expecting a nice chunk of change given a law school in the middle of a CONSTRUCTION ZONE, but all they offered was the standard...Arizona here is COME!....Utah is in my rear view mirror once and for all!

You need to do whats best for you. The great think about ASU is the school is up and running...I just think it would be hard to go to school at the U given the current state of affairs with construction at the U.
I am not entirely sure it would turn out cheaper at the U if you have a full ride at ASU...As you know, the ASU schollie has no stipulations (so you would not have to worry about losing the scholarship); the COL in Arizona is comparable to Utah (if not cheaper); and Arizona has more momentum in its favor for climbing in rank (the U only has in interim dean; it will take time for their rank to climb; the Utah job market is smaller than the Arizona market (job prospects); and real estate is CHEAPER in Arizona (could buy something before school starts and sell it at the end of law school---hopefully make a profit as economy ticks upwards)...
These were my thoughts on the matter

Re: Utah c/o 2017 Applicants
Idk man I went to utah for ug and work at a firm here. Not a single lawyer at the firm went to a school here, everyone went to university of Idaho, Tulsa, etc. Utah believe it or not is pretty impressive sounding around here and a lot of people don't get in. Maybe arizona is similar but I've never been to arizona so it would be weird to just pick up and move there. As for salaries, the average mid career pay for utah grads is 135k which is in the top 20 of all schools. Not sure why it's so high. Also cost of living for a nice place here is really low and the mountains are beautiful, seasons nice, etc. maybe I'm just trying to resolve my cognitive dissonance and telling myself it's okay to go to utah lol. Really starting to rethink my decision to decline my half scholarship to texas. But I guess if I want to practice here I'm in the right place.

I would view it as credible. Interesting, with a mid-career salary of that much in Utah is pretty good. COL is fairly cheaper here, and 135K gives you quite a bit of buying power here. Nice to know there is decent earning power here if you do well in school. Like you I want to practice in Utah (preferable SLC).

Look at the other schools that are referenced by this Forbes Link: Hasting, USF, USD...then look into these particular schools stats...this is a bit easier for me to do since I have friends from all THREE schools...What comes to mind is the old catch phrase: "there are lies, big lies, GIANT lies...and then there are STATISTICS"....not at all saying anything to question the veracity of these income claims...but please do not bank on these numbers for income horizons of your own.
From what I heard at admitted students day, number published, and my connections to Utah legal market, you should expect $40K coming from the U.

Re: Utah c/o 2017 Applicants
I feel like at median and below that is probably accurate, but I feel like I can be near the top of the class. My lsat is 9 points above median, and I'm okay/ used to studying 24/7. I feel like if you are top 20% you would be able to get 80k. And I just looked at Orem city job posts and they are hiring prosecutors starting at 68k which isn't bad for Pi in utah. I feel like it is a little risky but with good networking and grades one should be fine. I just don't feel comfortable taking on 130k in debt for texas where I'm probably at the bottom of the barrel academically instead of the top. That being said I wonder how much better BYU is for utah law if at all and if it would be a good idea to transfer there.. Anyways I've heard from attorneys here that's it's still easier to get utah biglaw (although it's very limited) from utah or BYU than trying to get in from out of state besides maybe hys. The big firms here have the same gpa cutoff from utah and BYU (pretty much making law review) which is much easier at utah because it's not really competitive at all compared to BYU.

Re: Utah c/o 2017 Applicants
Now, i am not sure if you are trolling or legit...that last comment came across poorly...i think you can see that if you read (and this is coming from someone who has walked away from the U).
The U will be harder than you give it credit for...the Utah culture is such that students just study...maybe its because there are not as many distractions or other cultural aspects that lead to hard work...
Please don't go to the U thinking you will be ranked anywhere near what your are anticipating...especially not because you scored 9 above the median on the LSAT...
Take the year off, prepare better for the LSAT and get a higher score, and reapply to a higher ranked program if you want to get near the income goals you have...

Re: Utah c/o 2017 Applicants
Idk man I have a 168 prolly not going to get higher. Plus my gpa is a 3.2 meaning I will always be below one 25th% which means I'll have to have a shit load of debt if I want to go somewhere top 20. I'm a pretty pessimistic person, but I was pulling 14 hour days last year working, going to class, and studying for the lsat. That turned out pretty well so I think I'll be fine at law school. People act like its a shot in the dark whether or not you will place well, but that's just not realistic it seems. If you put in the time, and prepare better than everyone else then you will probably do better. I have friends at the u and they say it's very chill and have made top 20% without even studying on weekends. I have a friend at wustl who is top 5% and smokes pot every night. This isn't rocket science. You just have to think like a lawyer, know the black letter law, make good outlines, and practice writing with hypos applying the law. I've already started prepping which I doubt many others have done.

But the people at law firms who are hiring know this information too...so they probably will no hire you then because the school was not competitive??? according to your logic, wouldn't you be better served going to the Y or just sitting out and reapplying earlier?

Re: Utah c/o 2017 Applicants
Possibly the y but I couldn't get a bishops endorsement so that's out of the cards for me. Not sure I would be able to handle the y lifestyle. Utah has good slc placement. Granted it's a saturated market and the salaries aren't the highest, for someone who wants to work in slc I think the u is still a good pick for the price. That being said I probably should curtail my expectations. Although I still hope to make 70k lol but I don't think that's terribly ridiculous.
