It seems to be mixed. My theory is that they call people on the west coast and email those on the east coast, but that's based on like, four observations. the dean also was sick for awhile, so they were only sending emails then :)

The people who get calls also get the email acceptance. I got my call on a Monday, and the email on that Wednesday (at the same time as the big batch of email acceptances). There doesn't seem to be much of a pattern (if any) regarding who gets a call before receiving the email.

I'm on the east coast, and I definitely got a call from Berkeley in early December. Might have been because I had a targeted LOR, but who knows.

Asha said in the Yale webinar that rejections will be via mail until close to when seat deposits are due, in which case they'll send an email.

Great, that'll be a sad letter for my parents to get.

scoobers' parents: OMG! SCOOBERS! GUESS WHAT?!? You got into Yale! We just received the envelope!
scoobers: (quietly) that envelope doesn't mean what you think it means...

But not really because you're going to be getting a phone call from Asha/Craig instead.

I'm getting more and more frustrated with random numbers/spammers calling my cell phone. I definitely just got butt-dialed from a 919 number and I had myself totally convinced it was Duke... Just some random dude talking to his dog.

For Northwestern, I also got an acceptance email in addition to the email which said that the decision letter was available. It arrived a few hours later. The email and the letter weren't exactly the same. I'm not sure if anyone else had this or not.

The email said that orientation had already started... :?

Doesn't look like anyone has checked in here yet since the batch of RD Chicago acceptances, but they accept people via email.

Based on chatter from other people, it appears that they waitlist people by email as well.

ETA: The status checker also updates pretty much instantaneously for admitted students to "Admitted: welcome to the class of 2017!"

Yep, waitlist notification is via email and status checker updates to "Waitlisted: Notified by Email".
