I think all merit scholarships come with a 3.2 GPA stip (which they say is top 45-50%, but I'm suspicious). The Public Interest Scholars Program requires "good standing" (2.33).

Loyola just had the 2nd worst drop in rankings of any school (-19)... ouch... definitely can't ignore that.

pretty much puts loyola out of the running for me. 96k isn't enough money to make up for that drop, especially when I have a similar offer from Wake, which went up significantly in the rankings this year

From the Dean:

"Loyola Law School, Los Angeles was ranked No. 87 out of 194 law schools in U.S. News & World Report’s 2015 edition of “America’s Best Graduate Schools.” The school’s Evening Division Program was ranked No. 5 out of 83 part-time programs, making it the top-ranked part-time law program in the West for the second year in a row and the only California program in the top 10. Loyola was ranked 6th for Trial Advocacy, 14th for Tax Law, and 13th on the Most Diverse Law Schools list.

The overall ranking is a disappointment. It does not reflect the quality of Loyola Law School. Loyola alumni are at the top of the legal profession, our students are well prepared, and our faculty include some of the top scholars in the country. This is a great law school.

Changes already underway at Loyola address key U.S. News ranking factors. While the current ranking is based on 2012 data for employment and bar passage, there were significant improvements in the 2013 data that will be used in the rankings next year. Loyola’s pass rate on the July 2013 bar exam was 87%--the third highest among all California law schools. The employment rate for the class of 2013 nine months after graduation was six percentage points ahead of 2012. In addition, Loyola is in the second year of an initiative to reduce the size of the entering class in order to adjust to the job market and keep entering standards high.

While this year’s ranking does not reflect the quality of Loyola, please know that I take this very seriously and am determined to improve our results."

Suffice it to say the students are not thrilled by the response.

Their drop in ranking shows how ill-prepared Loyola is for today's competitive market. In a day where every school up through Columbia and NYU negotiate scholarships, Loyola cannot afford the luxury of rigidly determining how much debt students must take on for such a great risk. And the yield protection is upsetting as well. No doubt, they lost out on many good candidates who would have taken the full ride over close to sticker at USC or UCLA (and yes- a 3.6, 166 candidate would not get much of a scholarship from UCLA or USC, but should do very well financially at Loyola. However, we have seen people with better stats receive under $80k in overall assistance!)

This.

I'm not going not because of their drop in ranking. I'm not going because of that top 50% stip. Honestly, Loyola would be an instant top contender for me if they offered me a full ride with the only stipulation being "remain in good academic standing." As a PI gunner, no, I'm not going to take my 167 and gamble for a 50% chance to keep my scholarship. Seriously. Why would I come here if I got fully guaranteed full rides from top 30s and 20s? It's really a shame. I like the school and I love that it's in my home city of LA. I applied again because I was hoping they'd get rid of the sTTTTip this time around. It's just too bad they refuse to adapt to the new climate.

what's you all's thought on negotiating with them (again) since they dropped in rank? this is truly embarrassing for the school.

Haven't withdrawn, but if someone is successful in getting the sTTTTips removed, let us all know. I'll probably shoot them an email later this week.

Hey guys, thanks for sharing all your experiences.

I was admitted over a month ago with 158 and 3.5. No $$$. Pretty disappointed especially since others with same or lower stats did. Any thoughts on negotiating or asking for money especially with the recent drop in rankings?

Note: Got into Pepperdine, Hastings, Southwestern (full ride). Others still pending

im gonna wait another month (closer to first deposit) before i shoot them a negotiation email. those with really good numbers will most likely react to the rank drop by withdrawing or missing the first deposit. gonna wait till then. what you think? because right now, loyola still has their head pretty high up saying we don't qualify their scholly medians. well their scholly median is according to last year's rank. they need to come to terms with where the school really is at now.

Good idea. Ya I think I'll do the same. A lot of borderline students who received money will probably forego LLS after the drop in rankings. The scholly amounts they're dishing out don't make sense. I have friends who have received a lot more guaranteed money from top 20 schools than from LLS. I'm still waiting on a decision from a few other schools with higher rankings which might play a factor in my negotiations.

I had withdrawn my app so there's $90k right there. I am certain that others will follow suite. It is unfortunate that posters here would love to attend but can't because of Loyola's inflexibility. I am hoping that all this negative feedback and law school transparency organizations condemning the 50% stip would make them reconsider.

FYI I have a friend who went to Loyola and told me that since the top of the class all tries to transfer out at the end of 1L, they offer full tuition scholarships then to many of their top performers. These sort of actions suggest that they do care.

If I were in the position of those who want to go, I would keep emailing Loyola with requests to negotiate and add new updates and offers from other schools. But I am sure that this will be much easier to do once the seat deposit deadline comes/goes.
