U of Minnesota c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 Cycle)

Post by mx23250 » Tue Nov 12, 2013 5:19 pm

I haven't seen a thread for the U of M this cycle so I figured I would get one started.

Has anyone received an interview and/or offer yet?

Best of luck to all!

Thank God, all of my MN angst was starting to build up and it needed an outlet.

I just went UR.

Has anyone else done a tour at UMN law school and what did you think of it?

I am a current undergrad. The facilities are definitely underwhelming. However from the tour, it seemed that all of the students thought the faculty were absolutely brilliant.

Also I went under review mid-October and I am also anxiously waiting especially with the new admissions head. I wonder if they are going to be a splitter haven anymore or if they are going to try and take like 165/3.6s over 2.9/168s

As long as USNWR only cares about medians, there is no reason to believe that UMN will stop being very splitter friendly. Thats their game.

Been in review since 11/4. Anyone know how long they usually take to send out decisions?

I've been in review since 11/4 also. On the status check page it says it can take up to 8 weeks and from what I hear/see they usually don't start releasing decisions until late November or early December. I'm assuming they've begun reviewing large batches and will wait at least a couple more weeks before they begin releasing decisions. Just my guess based on LSN data from last cycle.

I'm also very anxious to hear back. It's a reach school for me but I'd love to go there!

Although, for the record, I still check my status daily even though I'm not expecting any decision for a couple weeks :)

I've been in review for 5 1/2 weeks of their "up to 8 weeks" so hopefully I'll be in the first round of decisions.

Looks like last year they sent scholarship information with the acceptance letter, if you're fortunate enough to be accepted.

In review, as well. A very pretty area. And of course a great school.

What can you say about the location of the law school? I am from the east coast and currently living in the north west, how would you compare it (if you could) to either one of those places?

Thanks!

Also, checking in.

Admittedly, I don't get out much, so I cant really get into all the neat cultural things to do here. Im sure some locals can give a much better account of the city than I can. Also, I have not spent much time on the coasts . Compared to the big cities Ive spent a lot of time in, Minneapolis is very clean and safe. There is also a lot less poverty here compared to most cities. Traffic here is usually not a headache, people are generally friendly, and cost of living is low. There are 4 major sports teams, which is good.

The law school itself is on west bank of the campus, which is located a few miles from downtown Minneapolis. UMN has 50,000+ students & the campus has very college town feel to it. There are several fun undergrad bars within a mile or two of the of the law school. As someone desperately clinging to youth, this is appealing for me. Of course, the college vibe is not appealing to many applicants, which is fine, because down town Minneapolis (where basically all the firms are) is just a few miles from campus. Down town has a very urban feel to it. Then a few more miles away is uptown, where all the hip young professionals hang out and drink.
Thanks! And the obvious, obnoxious question - what are the job prospects looking like?

The best data is on LST. Im guessing placment will be better than the most recent year of LST data available because class size is down from 240 to 200 within the past few years. That's a normal fluctuation since apps have been down about 20 % nationwide the past few years.

UMN has relativly good placement compared to schools ranked below them.

I had been in review since 11/4. Today, I'm still in review but the date changed to 11/22. Getting closer to a decision perhaps?
