According to the facebook page, they do regional events (so I assume they won't pay travel stipends due to this). ASW in Austin is March 20-21.OsaroLJ wrote:I got the facebook invites. Did you write a why UT on your original app? Our numbers are pretty much the same. (Not that I mind writing a brief why UT, I can hack it out at the airport on sunday)jcb5329 wrote:171/3.6ishKatyMarie wrote:What were your numbers?jcb5329 wrote:FWIW I'm out of state and accepted straight off. No, I didn't do anything besides the standard app.alex.cm wrote:Did you write a why UT on your original app? Our numbers are pretty much the same. Received this today, too. I could have probably guessed this was coming since they do not initially ask for a Why UT essay with the app. I'm out of state and over both 75%, but I do have personal ties to Texas that would not have been obvious from my app.alex.cm wrote:Just got a request to submit a Why UT essay to add to my application, "in light of my non-resident status." Someone earlier on in this thread got that email to write a "Why Texas." I'm too lazy to look it up, but yeah I definitely would if I were you guys!

Any theories on how long is appropriate? I'm thinking .5-1 page, and double spaced since that's how they ask for your PS.

I was one of a couple people who received that request. It's definitely a good thing, I was accepted 1 business day after I submitted the essay. Mine was around a page, which I would guess is pretty typical.Austinbound wrote:Someone earlier on in this thread got that email to write a "Why Texas." Can you submit a why Texas after you submit the app? Where would you send it to? The school?

Got the call a couple of hours ago! Said that they wouldn't be able to evaluate me for scholarships until after they get back to campus on the 6th, if that is helpful info for anyone.

Thanks, that's helpful. I was accepted last week and if I don't hear anything until next month I won't freak out. Or.. I won't freak out as much.

Yeah, they told me to expect $ info mid to late January, and reinforced that when I went to campus.cannibal ox wrote:Thanks, that's helpful. I was accepted last week and if I don't hear anything until next month I won't freak out. Or.. I won't freak out as much.

It's a YP move. They're trying to feel you out to see if you're worth an admit.alex.cm wrote:Just got a request to submit a Why UT essay to add to my application, "in light of my non-resident status." Anyone else get this?

If you want to do a Why Texas paragraph, you can do so as part of an LOCI. Especially if you have something else to communicate other than continued interest (e.g. fall grades).anubis1911 wrote:Can you submit a why Texas after you submit the app? Where would you send it to? The school?

Re: Texas c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
For those of you who received a "Why Texas" statement request: I also received one a couple weeks ago. I submitted it a week later and was denied admission (first rejection of the cycle) today. LSP put my chances at a little over 80% and my softs are way above average (military+leadership positions).
Honestly, I didn't take the statement very seriously as I was already accepted into better schools that i'm considering more heavily. I basically regurgitated information from TLS/their website and wrote about a page double spaced, which they seemed not to have liked-otherwise, based on my numbers, I should have been admitted. Others with similar or higher numbers were also rejected outright today, leading my to conclude that numbers matter a lot less than in other places. My theory-which is based on nothing but conjecture- is that they only offer sits to nonresidents who manage to convince them that they are committed to attending. So, if you are serious about wanting to be admitted, I suggest you take this statement very seriously and be creative about it; your numbers will not save you!
Hope this helps and good luck to you all.

LSP is pretty useless. What are your actual numbers?Rt887 wrote:For those of you who received a "Why Texas" statement request: I also received one a couple weeks ago. You didn't tell them that you weren't interested because you were already in at better schools did you? That could have been a bad move if you did.

Obviously I didn't write that i'm not interested, I would have been better off not submitting anything at all...
I sounded eager and made it seem like they fit all my priorities in choosing a school, its just that I did not put too much effort into it, and I think it showed. Just don't half ass it if you actually want to go is my point

So about how long after receiving the acceptance letter can we expect scholly info? I've already gotten the original acceptance envelope and then the 3 reasons to go to UT letter from the Dean. Just waiting on that last piece of mail!
