True, but that simple number wouldn't change the idea of the T14 schools. Texas is, still, mainly a regional school. It is the best regional school out there, so doing well can make for mobility, but still not as much as the T14. Maybe if we break in and stay there that would change, but for now it is pretty evident UT places #1 in Texas and that's where you should plan to practice.rion91 wrote: I'd like to see Texas STAY in the T14 more than arrive at it again

Got in! Missed the call so I got a voice message. UT is my top choice and I thought that I might not make it so I'm very excited.

Re: Texas c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
Quick question on status checker: I haven't received an email about it yet (applied 3/1, go confirmation of receipt of application 3/4), but I was able to find my UT-EID on the system. Logged in a few times to an error message, but was able cleanly log-in today. Said that no active application was on file. Is this because I've jumped the gun and not waited for the email (seems like it goes out a couple weeks after, from what I have read) about the status checker/UT-EID? An indication that I've been rejected? Anyone gone through something similar or have an idea what might be going on? Appreciate any responses - thank you.

I think you jumped the gun. It took me two weeks to get the status checker. Even so it's not that helpful. Just shows your application is compete aka processedbmr456 wrote:Quick question on status checker: I haven't received an email about it yet (applied 3/1, go confirmation of receipt of application 3/4), but I was able to find my UT-EID on the system. Who is going to the ASW next week? I'm attending for sure since I don't live too far from Austin.

Re: Texas c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
So, after reading much of the latter half of the forum here, am I getting the idea that UT weighs a bit to a lot more on the LSAT number than the GPA?
If so, why do schools do this? Is the GPA not a better aggregate reflection of a person's ability to time manage, grasp material, and perform well? I just feel like you could have one bad day and screw the pooch with the LSAT.
Thoughts?

The LSAC and others, so many others, have done studies about that issue and have consistently concluded the LSAT is shown to be the best predictor for success in law school. More than GPA. More than any softs.the_dude83 wrote:So, after reading much of the latter half of the forum here, am I getting the idea that UT weighs a bit to a lot more on the LSAT number than the GPA?

Re: Texas c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
Also GPA is entirely subject to what school you went to and furthermore how they grade. Not every GPA is created equal, i.e. Harvard 3.5 does not equal Wayne State 3.5. LSAT's on the other hand are an even playing field. Everyone takes the same test.the_dude83 wrote:So, after reading much of the latter half of the forum here, am I getting the idea that UT weighs a bit to a lot more on the LSAT number than the GPA?

I feel like the LSAC and the LSAT are big rip-offs that don't do anything but make the law school admissions process expensive (so expensive), and shallow. I don't think you can tell anything about someone from a standardized test, or at least, anything meaningful. Schools have to keep their medians up and rising to stay competitive in very powerful nonsense rankings like US News. It's a bummer. Also, I wouldn't trust the LSAC or anyone else associated with the status quo of the admissions world to judge the utility of such a huge money maker.
But, to be fair, I think narrative evaluations should replace grades and testing, so no one is really asking me for my opinion about this. I'm just giving it because I've been lurking on this forum constantly since I turned in my app.
Anyway, anyone get in (or not in) this afternoon?

You can take the LSAT 3 times. Also GPAs are wildly variable in their worth as has been mentioned.the_dude83 wrote:So, after reading much of the latter half of the forum here, am I getting the idea that UT weighs a bit to a lot more on the LSAT number than the GPA?

Re: Texas c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
I disagree about them making the process shallow. A quantification of ability on some means is far better than trying to look at the qualifications. LSAT puts us all on a fair playing ground. My GPA is right at average for my degree, but far below that of law school medians for pretty much most schools. The variance between what classes you take, what school you went to, what degree you pursued, etc. makes GPA a horrible way to compare candidates. The LSAT puts us all on a standard playing field of evaluation.flypelicanfly wrote: I feel like the LSAC and the LSAT are big rip-offs that don't do anything but make the law school admissions process expensive (so expensive), and shallow. Furthermore you get more chances at an LSAT. One bad test day can be made up, one or two bad semesters can nearly crush your GPA. LSAT measures how hard you can work, and apply certain skills to a particular question(s) at hand especially in response to logical consideration. That compared to GPA means the LSAT will always win out.

I was driving up Lamar and saw three obvious out of towners. Dressed up in hipster SXSW gear but up near Justin Ln & Lamar. No reason they would be there except trying to get the rail :p
Also this gem from last year, hehe.
