I was talking exclusively about ASD. Every single question asked was answered with "because our alumni network is strong." Yes, this is a good thing, but at ASD there was an absence in talk about academic quality.

And yes, every school will have pompous people, but out of the ASDs I went to, UF was the most prominent.

I'm sure there are great people at UF. I met a few when I was there for sure. I'm just giving my general thoughts on the ASD.

Besides that one girl on my panel, the other students I spoke with were great! Very nice and down to earth. As a Seminole, it left a very sour taste in my mouth when the alumni panel "put down" the school. I just kept thinking (while still acknowledging that rankings are a bit arbitrary in their calculation) that FSU RANKED HIGHER THIS YEAR. The attitude was "why on earth would you choose FSU over UF."

I'm not a Seminole or a Gator, so I don't have a dog in the fight, but I felt the same way. Instead of saying how they were improving the law school, most students only wanted to beat FSU.

Yep.

I don't really give a shit about FSU v UF. I care about my education

I think you guys are feeding off one another and allowing yourselves to get carried away at this point. Aside from the alumni I didn't hear FSU being mentioned once by anyone. I don't think anyone at UF feels legitimately threatened by FSU, the new rankings are just an annoyance. USNWR is a business and doing shocking things like that is how they sell magazines.

Regardless, it's a rivalry that stems from sports and proximity. I think if you dig a bit deeper you'd find it's really just friendly banter and that there is no reason to be offended.

By the way, did either of you attend FSU's ASD? I heard from several people yesterday who had gone to both that FSU beat the, "were now ranked number one in Florida," drum like a dead horse. In my opinion that is far more pompous and off-putting, not to mention disingenuous, than anything I saw out of UF yesterday.

No. I really have no interest in FSU but yet again we are talking about the rivalry. Over it.

Oh man, wait til you start 1L (at any school), law school attracts many interesting personalities as I'm sure you can imagine.

To be honest, although you might not want to hear it, law school is really not about fostering academic pursuit, it's about doing what you can from day one to get high grades, which will turn into a job. This is true of any school you go to, unless you go to Harvard or one of the other top schools that don't grade.

I'm not sure where you went to UG. But this is common at every large school. Texas v A&M. Michigan v Ohio State. Auburn v. Alabama. USC v UCLA. Etc.

In the case of UF/FSU, both happen to have great sports and law programs so it may be exacerbated a bit, but I see it as a fun rivalry and welcome distraction. I hardly think it will affect your education and I certainly wouldn't let it factor into your decision.

All things considered, if that's the worst thing you have to say about the school you probably had a pretty good visit.

I don't want anyone to get me wrong - I really liked the school. I'm fully aware of all the law school personalities, but I think they may have been exacerbated at ASD.

Maybe I got unlucky with the students I sat with and the tour guide I had, but I'm not lying when I say all they talked about was FSU being an awful place instead of why their school was a good choice among all schools.

Sorry so many of you guys share this sentiment. I feel like a lot of people here now feel like we have to preemptively defend ourselves against FSU and it wasn't really like that when I visited for ASD a few years ago.

UF has been indoctrinating its student body since 1853, so it's no surprise you guys experienced these behaviors at the ASD.

I just wish the focus was more well-rounded. Like I've said, it seems like they were trying to sell me two things: 1) Gator Nation and 2) fsu sucks.

I guess it was just disheartening for someone who doesn't really care about the rivalry. I was interested in UF because I like UF and I think they give me a good shot at jobs in Florida, not because I'm anti-FSU.

I feel like there may have been a disconnect from ASDs in the past and this one. One girl was telling me that she came because the faculty members convinced her during the reception last year, but there weren't really any around. The table with faculty name tags was full of unclaimed name tags even at the end of ASD.

I don't want to offend anyone, and I hope I haven't, but maybe UF just isn't the right place for some of us. It might be just as simple as that. I have nothing against UF students.

This thread has become a joke.

But when an FSU and UM student enter the equation, what do you expect? You can't troll your way to the top.

I thought this was a thread where potential Uf Law students could share their thoughts and hopefully get a better view on the school. If you think that's trolling, then so be it. No need to be nasty. We're all adults. Don't make this personal.

I was referring to Scalia in regard to UM and sailor moon in regard to FSU. You guys are just absurd. One girl's comments taken out of context are worth a page worth of your whining about UF Law's, a community of thousands, pompousness? Give me a break.

Troll away guys, but this is all petty nonsense and/or trolling.

Also, sailor moon, yes this is a place where potential students can air concerns but given your comment back on January 20th that you were deciding between FSU and some other school, and the fact that FSU is your UG, you seem to just be trolling and/or defending your UG.

But hey, troll away. Fill another 5 pages with complaints about how the restroom napkins weren't folded properly. But trolling won't change the fact that UF is top dog. I was at ASD and did not hear FSU mentioned once.

Yeah. Even after viewing the campus and getting a students and alumni perspective, UF is clearly the better choice. My UG is UF and you can bash all you want, but if you take UF seriously it opens many more doors than FSU or any other option in Florida. Especially outside the top 20%.

They made Gator Nation a big pull because fellow alum look out for the alma mater and would rather hire UF grads than FSU. It's a REAL thing. Just keep that in mind.

As far as the pompous feeling some felt, it was only joking. UF and FSU have a huge rivalry. Outside of football especially. UF didn't focus on the educational aspect because they know they have a good faculty as well as everyone else in Florida. You'll get the same education no matter what. What you should be looking at is the accessibility of the staff and the willingness to connect you to alumni, which I definitely saw yesterday.

You're buying the degree, opportunity, connections, employment opportunity and alumni all of which UF has to offer.

In my eyes you're good, Cricket. I just think you and Sailor got a little carried away. Sailor doesn't appear to have ever been considering UF and Scalia is an obvious UM troll with a mean inferiority complex.

We all have different perspectives. So I was just sharing mine. I definitely didn't feel like it was hostile or any of that. UF offers an experience completely different from FSU. So they are going to have very different ASD experiences. That's all. I've visited outside of ASD for tours and class visits. If you have any questions please contact me. I totally get how you may have a different experience from me and that's respectable. I just felt more comfortable as I am a UF grad so I know what I will be getting myself into.

You make a lot of assumptions here. I'm not trolling, simply voicing my opinion the day after ASD to get others thoughts. I actually signed my letter of intent for enrollment this afternoon. UF's curriculum matches the work I will do with the law firm after graduation. I like the school. You're being extremely sensitive, and dare I say, insecure.

Coming from California I care about a university that has national prestige and I feel will be good within the state. I didn't apply to FSU or anywhere else in Florida because in California no one knows a school unless it's UF. That matters to me
