this may be totally neurotic of me, but hyphenated words count as one word right?

I'm literally at 250 words exactly and MS Word counts hyphenated words as a single word and I just want to make sure this is the accepted convention. I wonder how they count the words in our 250s.

It is one word. The other answerer is wrong.
A hyphen makes it into one word. I am an English teacher with 30 years experience and I know that I am right.

Hey guys, just got accepted to Yale two days ago! I don't come to this board very often, but I've found it really helpful when I was studying for the LSAT, for example, and registered an account to share my stats, etc. I'd be willing to share my 250 as well if people are interested as well.

What date did your application go complete? Stats?

Application went complete 12/5, stats are 3.96 and 175, average softs, current senior at Yale. International student.

Should I just post my 250 here or on a separate thread?

Edit: I got the call on 1/26 (Sunday night - weird), from Craig Janecek, the Director of Admissions, not Asha.

My 250, about my experience working in a student-run restaurant during my senior year:

“Trust the blade.”

I closed my eyes and directed the knife with my curled left middle finger, firmly pressed against the wet scallion stalks.

Chop chop chop chop chop chop chop.

As my left hand retreated to the blade’s advance, the heap of thin rings to the right grew, pearly white at first, then darker and darker shades of green.

Stealing another glance at the order sheets laid out on the counter, my co-chef urged, “Three misos, two pork, one potato. Got it?”

Miso meant that huge pot of miso-braised spare ribs sitting quietly on the upper right burner. It’s a Japanese-style braising dish, with chopped daikon, carrots, and some pear slices added for an autumn flavor.

My Catonese pork belly slices still had to be charred with a flame gun, and the potato croquettes aren’t in the fryer yet, but I had something else on hand.

“Just a second…”

I had run out of scallion rings, which I use to garnish two of my dishes.

As the blade edged close to the tip of the stalks, the rhythmic, soft crunching sound that accompanied every cut began to occupy the entirety of my senses. Nothing else mattered besides what I was doing now, and what I had to do immediately after.

At that moment, in the hustle and bustle of the restaurant, with outstanding orders unfulfilled and new dishes waiting to be created, I felt closer to zen than ever before.

“New order!”

Chop chop chop chop chop chop chop.

I don't mean to interject, but someone told me on another thread that Yale is the only school that does not do decisions on a rolling basis.

How, then, are some people being accepted while others have yet to submit their applications? Isn't that ipso facto rolling admissions?

It is rolling, but applying late won't hurt your chance. Asha has said this multiple times, i believe. For example:

I realize this contradicts the common wisdom for law school applicants, namely that because most schools have a rolling admissions process in which slots are filled on an ongoing basis, it’s to an applicant’s advantage to apply as early as possible. I’ll delve into our file reading process, which also involves offering admission on a rolling basis, in more detail soon. But for now let me just say that based on the way we distribute files for review – which is unique, as far as I am aware – your admission chances stay more or less constant throughout the season. The most important thing is to have the strongest application possible, and if that means you need until December to prepare for and take the LSAT, so be it.

Does anyone else think that the 250 was way easier to write than their personal statement? I found writing about myself in a way that makes me seem appealing to be extremely difficult, but I felt like all that I had to do for the 250 was write eloquently and convincingly about pretty much anything.
