So these JS1s I keep hearing about...do they come out only on certain days, like JS2s, or will they come out any time of any day?

They seem to be scattered. I think there have been small clusterings, but it's less wave-like than JS2s.

3.7x/176 (one-take) scorer here. About to submit my app and am absolutely kicking myself for applying so late.

I read on this very site an interview with the former Dean of Admissions where he said there was a "slight" advantage to applying early. I interpreted this to mean I should tweak my personal statement endlessly for the past month or so, as such tweaks would more than compensate for the "slight" advantage of an early application. I could have easily submitted at the beginning of December (sigh).

Looks like everyone with a 175+ who applied at the beginning of the cycle got accepted, even with sub 3.7 GPAs. If I get waitlisted/rejected I will be frustrated to no end at missing out on my dream school in what is perhaps the most favorable application cycle of the past 30 years.

I just hope I don't miss out on one of CCN as well because of this late-timing. Yikes.

Don't fret too much. Just get your apps in and take some comfort in knowing you made your apps as good as they could be!
Also, tons of people are just applying now. You still have great chances with those numbers.

Does anyone know if HLS holds people without giving them a JS1 first? Trying to gauge whether they will hold me or flat out reject me.

Pretty sure that was common over the last few cycles. In fact, I believe it was more common to hold people without JS1's than with JS1's.

I'll have to check out the past held threads to be sure though. Apparently there won't be holds this year, at least in name; I imagine things will still function in a similar way.

They're not doing holds anymore, are they?

Where'd you hear this? And what would the alternative be...just giving no response until later?

From TripTrip, a current HLS student whom I believe got the info from inside sources.

Ah...hmm. Sounds like there may be a long time sitting in limbo this cycle. Or, on the bright side, a lot more red.

For what it's worth, from the held threads I seem to recall that while most held students in the thread didn't have JS1s, the first people to be accepted after being held interviewed relatively early. I think the held acceptances started coming out in February or March at the latest.

That seems to possibly explain why they decided to get rid of them, as it probably led to unnecessary ambiguity (I assume they got a lot of "is a Hold the same as Waitlist?" type emails). The people who would have been "held" last year will just have to wait a bit longer for a decision.

Grrr. Not liking any of this.

Do people think there will still be more JS1s for people who went complete in November? Say for someone whom MyLSN gave a 1/3 chance of admission...

Keep your hope alive all they way up until they tell you otherwise. As much as we like to try and predict things, these are human beings not robots, and they don't necessarily do everything in perfect order. Hang in there, and if you're competitive they'll give you that JS1. But the fact that you have a 1/3 chance at HLS tells me you will have some awesome options at many schools, so keep that in mind during this grueling wait.

Checking in here with my first-ever TLS post. I'm also kicking myself for not applying earlier (I submitted about a week ago). I would feel a whole lot better about my chances had I been able to get this done in the fall, considering my numbers (3.65/173).

Best of luck to all!

Well, I know that a number of people who were held/waitlisted in the past got JS1s months after they applied, while they were being held or on the waitlist. At the same time there were also lots of people who applied in November and never had that opportunity, so it's hard to say what happens at this point.

Thanks ls22. It's just frustrating...if it were <10%, it'd be easy to shrug off, but having not received a JS1 with 1/3 odds just makes me feel like my PS was grossly deficient. But either way, it's true that there are other fish in the sea...and some amazing fish at that!

Apparently from 11-12 on LSN:
WL -> Accepted: 15
Held -> Accepted, not WL: 14

Haven't found the numbers for last cycle though.

FYI I have numbers in the range you specified and applied in November. I got a JS1 but have not gotten a JS2 (yet?) even though other people who interviewed before and after I got them.
