Reading old articles written by Tamanaha pre-2011 (scooped from WUSTL grads/students-taking-questions thread) makes me more and more pissed off I won't be studying under him as a 1L.

C&D: Fiero and whoever else, suck it.

I honestly do feel bad for people who don't get to experience Tamanaha as a 1L. He teaches upper level classes completely different than he runs a 1L class. I wish more of my 1L professors were like him, because despite how cliche is sounds he really is the best at getting people to think like a lawyer.

unfortunately it looks like i won't be able to welcome u guys to WashU, i was actually very much looking forward to meeting the rest of you. Please do not hesitate to PM me or message me on FB (for those of you who discovered who i am) if you ever have questions or concerns about your classes, job search, transferring etc..

Some departing thoughts:
1. You will meet people who tell u that u can take it easy until late-October. This is partly true. U can do decently well despite not doing much your first two months. I have friends who did decently. But i did not follow this advice. I went 110% from day 1. In retrospect some of it might have been unnecessary. But i wasn't willing to take that chance. It's always better to have worked too hard and done well than always wonder "what if I had worked harder?" at the end of the term.

2. Who your professors are and who is on your class-curve is random. But law school grading is not. The students who score the most points will get the highest grades. It is indeed possible to figure out how to score those points. Some profs are easier to read than others. And sometimes it will require you working harder than what seems to be necessary.

3. Be nice to everyone. If u don't like them, pretend. I probably could have done better job with this.

4. Don't get caught lying about your grades. it will be hilarious for the rest of ur class and they will never forget it. They will talk about you in facebook group chats. If you must lie about your grades, pick something realistic like an A-. Don't give yourself an A+

5. Until fall grades are out, you are simultaneously the first and last in your class. You are not special. (Yes i realize this is ironic in light of my tar) This is simple math. Someone WILL be at the bottom of the curve. The cement will dry after 1L and you'll be stuck if u do poorly. At the same time, you could be #1. The time to get your shit together is NOW. There is no "i'll just get 4.0 next term" like there was in college.

6. Schlafly or whatever isn't that good

7. Don't use any sample materials from WashU's CSO. Use the samples from HLS or comparable school. Resume review at CSO is basically "Hmm okay spelling errors? grammar errors? Blatant lies? Too much bold? okay you're good." Same with cover letters. Remember that CSO's goal is to place as many students in jobs as possible, it's about quantity for them, not whether you get your dream job or are happy. Look out for your own career and subject their advice to scrutiny and always get a second opinion from a 2L/3L that you can trust. And then get a third opinion.

8. Once grades/journals are out, be realistic about your goals. Unfortunately you can't wish yourself to a better job. If you're outside top 10% then it's time to start mass mailing and accept that you may not be working at a V10 firm.

9. If you want to clerk, start preparing early. I just know that the timeline has been accelerated to the point where you basically apply at the end of 1L. We're not great at placing clerks, but give yourself the best chance possible.

Congrats man! You've been beyond incredible with advice for us 0L's (Almost 1L's, we grow up so fast!), as well as a really cool dude throughout! You better stay on TLS so I can panic send you PM's from time to time!

If you're willing to answer I am curious why you transferred though, especially because getting into CLS and Chi means you absolutely had the grades to be a lock for biglaw. The only reason I could see would be clerking, although the increased tuition cost (As I assume transfers don't get scholarships?) would be pretty rough.

I still owe you lots of drinks, visit STL!

I'll talk more about this later, but there is no such thing as "lock for BigLaw" at WUSTL

yeah that was probably an exaggeration on my part. I do think there's a certain point where BigLaw is more likely than not
