WUSTL doesn't really have a reputation for it like some other schools like University of Washington, but sometimes schools will waitlist a person if they believe that they will not actually attend, and perhaps just want a scholarship offer for negotiation purposes (probably more applicable with WUSTL, as after last year, people will be looking for fulls to negotiate with the lower T14, and maybe Vandy/UT/UCLA/USC).
I obviously don't work in admissions, but what schools seem to consider is:
1. Your numbers/likelihood of receiving a "better" offer
2. How likely they think it is you will attend - how interested have you been in the school? (this is where interviews come in). Do you have a reason to be in St Louis, Seattle, wherever?
This is all obviously based on browsing this site and are my impressions btw, but hopefully it gives you some idea.
Btw, some schools will do a WL YP initially, which sometimes you can get out of by sending LOCI.
Thanks for this. Sublime. My numbers are a bit better than WUSTL's applicants in general, i guess. But I went to UG there and really loved it. Hope they believe me.
