The merger of pin and pen in Southern American English. In the purple areas, the merger is complete for most speakers. Note the exclusion of the New Orleans area, Southern Florida, and of Georgia's and South Carolina's "Low Country" area. The purple area in California consists of the Bakersfield and Kern County area, where migrants from the south-central states settled during the Dust Bowl. There is also debate whether or not Austin, Texas is an exclusion. Based on Labov, Ash & Boberg (2006:68).

I have a friend who works in Bakersfield in the oil industry. It surprises me how much his attire hasn't changed (he went to Texas A&M), so it makes sense.

Since we're doing maps now, I will post this extremely awesome bunch of maps from Business Insider.

It's tangentially related to this thread because you can see the insular nature of StL on a number of the maps, especially on the soda/pop/coke one.

Born and raised in St. Louis and I would never ever call it the south. The arch is the gateway to the Midwest for a reason

Lol in all seriousness, I did cardio and lifting in one session so I don't have to go twice today. I drank last night AND had a Jimmy John's Gargantuan while out, so I figured I needed some extra time.
I guess this is a good example of letting the hours dictate the tasks and not the other way around. Cuse, it won't happen again.

But no need to be at the gym for hours. I consider myself in at least decent shape and don't spend more than 1 hour.bound wrote:Attax wrote:Why so long at the gym?

I live in Alabama and people really do say this. I am also sure that no one in the deep south would consider St. Louis a part of the south.Ricky-Bobby wrote:inb4 wtf is the devil is beating his wife

Yeah, no one here considers it the South, either. At least not that I know.Savage13 wrote:I live in Alabama and people really do say this. I am also sure that no one in the deep south would consider St. Louis a part of the south.Ricky-Bobby wrote:inb4 wtf is the devil is beating his wife

Mason-Dixon Line is bullshit. I go to school in PA, and I'm from MD/DC, so my friends tease me and say I'm from the south because of the stupid line, but that's just not true. So, I could see the same being said of STL. Southern MD is the south, but the DC area is not at all.

Mason-Dixon back in 18th century really not applicable to MD/DC/VA at all...scottidsntknow wrote:Mason-Dixon Line is bullshit. Back in 'dee ole' days it took three horse-o-carriage days from Charlottesville to DC.
I went to school in VA and south VA is truly southern state...

In my opnion the states that make up the south all have a college institution in the SEC conference if your not repersented in the SEC conference your not in the south. The state of Virgina may be a toss up however. (Texas A&M is an exception. Texas is not the south...it is Texas. That state needs its own damn conference so many schools)

I think the southern states along the borders to the south are North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Those plus the deep south states of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina make up the rest. Texas, Kentucky, and Virginia are not generally considered southern states by most people in the south, although to be fair, there are still a lot of people who would include those.

Yes, I consider it the south. I do not consider it the deep south however. It could arguably be labeled a southern borderstate.gta wrote:Do you not think North Carolina is in the South?dsamuels wrote:In my opnion the states that make up the south all have a college institution in the SEC conference if your not repersented in the SEC conference your not in the south. (In my opinion one of the schools from NC and Virginia should proabably be in the SEC, but whatever the conferences are all over the place now)

I may be a little late to the conversation, but I agree with this. I am from a state everyone would agree is the South, and I can tell you that no one here considers Missouri to be the South. Also, as a northerner in a southerner's body (bad way of saying I strongly dislike the South) who has been everywhere, I can tell you that Arnold, St. Charles, etc. are nothing like southern towns. Branson and Springfield, ok, but not STL, KC, or anywhere close to them.XO_MissCourtney wrote:Yeah, I'm with Dredd. I consider STL/Missouri to be Midwest, but I'm from California so west of Colorado means Midwest until you get to the East Coast and the South means you're touching the Gulf + a few outliers...like Arkansas and South CarolinaDredd_2017 wrote:What exactly is the distinction between midwestern vs south, culture wise? Coming from the west coast I just kind of assume the whole middle of the country is pickups and barbeque (Not that either of those things are bad, especially barbeque!) besides Chicago.JCougar wrote:St. Louis the city is pretty Midwestern culture-wise. But when you get out into the suburbs--and especially the exurbs like St. Charles--the culture gets pretty "Southern" actually.Fiero85 wrote:STL isn't the South. STL, KC, and Columbia are all Midwestern. But I will grant that I consider STL on the border of the South. The southern half of Missouri gets pretty "down South" culturally pretty fast beyond the STL area.
As J Cougar pointed out, the difference is on social issues. Sadly, racism is still very prevalent here. Also, I'd be willing to bet Missouri legalizes same sex marriage and pot before any southern state. The South is still in the early 90's on social topics. No exaggeration.
