It seems as if there has been some confusion, and perhaps even some scoffing (looking at you, RB ) about the methods of buttoning a shirt. The two methods in question are: "top down" and "bottom up". Now I'm sure there are plenty of smart asses ITT and the world in general who will say "But Fiero, it's called a button DOWN! SO YOU SHOULD BUTTON IT DOWNWARD, HURR DURR!" Well I'm not here to try to hammer this square peg of truth and knowledge into round-holed brains. If you aren't willing to open your eyes, think critically, and make a change in your thinking when mad knowledge is dropped on you- I can't help. Ignorance is bliss I guess.

But for those of you enjoy a good thought exercise and like to do things practically, I give you this: buttoning your shirt from the bottom up is the way to go - because it is more logically consistent and user friendly.

We all know there are three classic ways to wear a button down shirt: formal (all buttons buttoned up), semi-formal (all but the very top button closed), and casual (all but the top two buttons buttoned). I've labeled these as such in the handy diagram below. Guess what the common denominator in all these classic styles are ladies and gentlemen: Yep, the bottom button(s) are always buttoned. So it's quite simple really. By nature of these bottom buttons being consistently treated the same, they provide a comfort and stability that I and other enlightened shirt wearers who use the bottom as their starting point have come to know and love.

You'll never get buttons crossed or confused even for the slightest of moments if you just 1) pull your shirt out gently from the very bottom, 2) locate and connect the bottom button and it's assigned hole, and 3) proceed up the shirt with your buttoning efforts at your leisure.

Life is too short, and getting dressed is often at too brain dead of an hour, to subject yourself to the multi part equation that is buttoning a shirt from the top down. So many variables and traps. My way has none of those, and all other factors become equal in practice. But if you enjoy chaos, be my guest. I'll be buttoning my shirt with ease and never crossing up buttons or even coming close.

I think you are right… all shirts with buttons are called "button up," because you button them up to close them (up here is part of the verb, similar to "beat him up") and button down shirts are the ones with buttons on the ends of the collar. Or at least that's what my mom says.

This lends credence to Fiero's bottom-up logic, but I have neither (before today) heard of anyone closing his shirts this way, nor have I ever experience that terrifying chaos he describes by choosing to start at the top.

Look, I'm a reasonable, open-minded man. I went ahead and tried your "bottom-up" method last night. It was the most awkward, ridiculous thing imaginable. Top-down is more efficient, because the shirt hangs and naturally comes together for buttoning after the first button (whether this is the top button for ties, second button for normal shirt wear, or third if you want to look like a modern day Burt Reynolds). With bottom-up, you're fumbling around trying to find the bottom hole while the shirt billows about.

At the end of the day, if you want to put your shirt on incorrectly you can. Just don't try to sell me on the idea.

I'm impressed you even tried it, so I can't say you're (as much of) a stick in the mud anymore, RB. An admirable effort.

I suppose a newbie might struggle with my method, but I don't experience the same billowing effect. I gently pull my shirt together at the bottom button, then it just lays flat near my navel, and I giddy on up the remaining buttons with ease. I might even be willing to admit that top-down is more efficient as you say, on a case-by-case-basis. But my whole point is that the top dow method runs the risk of getting 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th buttons and the holes crossed. Then you feel like an idiot, and loose any tiny amount of time you may have gained by going with gravity. So I say to you likewise, enjoy your (IMO) dubious method and I'll keep mine.
