I do think there's some truth to this. The current situation benefits law schools insofar as they know who's really interested, b/c those applicants have to really ride it out. It threatens to get a little inhumane, though. I never dealt with spring/summer waiting for money, WL, etc when I went through graduate admissions.

This is actually a legitimate question. I think it's another example of the fact that schools (especially mid-T14) are terrified about being the first one to fully commit to applicants. They're all essentially waiting each other out -- and making the applicants wait along with them.

At some point in the next few years, if this continues, the AALS is going to have to step in and impose some best practices. If it were up to the schools, they'd wait until August or September, and then expect everyone to pick up and move in a week.

I'm not an expert on this stuff, but I'd think some of the T-14 schools are going to lose this game of chicken if they scare off all their highly qualified candidates with endless holds and waitlists...

I'm with you all...waitlisted. 167/3.8, wrote Why Michigan. Disappointing, of course, but impressive how pleasant (relatively) Michigan was in that email.

Yeah, I'm predicting NYU's median goes to 175 :D. In all seriousness, they seemed to take a completely different approach. Give people very fast decisions (comparatively speaking, I know there are still plenty of people waiting) and then wage an endless outreach campaign for accepted students. If you take a look at the c/o 2017 thread, you'll see a lot of people who were very happy with the way they handled things. There are already people who were held at Columbia coming in and saying, in essence, "screw CLS I'm going to NYU." I could see this having some impact.

Nah they'll be fine. That's the worst part (from an applicant's point of view) -- schools can wait until the summer and we'll still gladly line up to go. That's why short of an outside enforcement mechanism (like the AALS), they'll just continue to do this.

The thing is, once you're above the 75th, it doesn't really matter how far above it you are as far as the school's stats are concerned. For Michigan, a 171 is as good as a 175, so there's really not much of a downside for them to YP

Not even the 75ths. It's really the median they care about more than anything. So even a 171 is fairly dispensable.

Huh. Never thought about it that way. Makes sense though.

Oh well, it's real cold there anyway. :P

WL today

LSAT: 75th
GPA: >> 75th
No Why Michigan

Pretty expected, I didn't give them any reason to think I'd consider them. Oh well.

Are why essays getting too commonplace? Perhaps they don't do much to distinguish people. Of course it depends on how great/not great the reasons are in the paper.

WL'd as well. I'll be riding it out. 4th T-14 WL, but with my super-splitter status, I'm not terribly surprised or down about it!

Good luck to my fellow waiters.

So, many contenders are getting waitlisted, with or without why essays. Not sure what to make of it.
