I was there. It was good, though not much new information, particularly if you are a regular to this website. It took place in one of their lecture halls - probably about 100 people or so showed up (mostly college students or recent grads, by the look of it). Additionally, they are undergoing some pretty significant renovation in the main lobby of the law school building. It looks nice, from what I could tell.

Yup. I learned a bit about the Columbia overall, but for applications it was mostly stuff already covered by TLS. I'm still glad I went though. Additionally, some of the questions asked towards the end, especially revolving around character and fitness had me holding back laughter.

I was glad to learn they encourage students to take classes in the business school. But, it did seem that some of the questions were rather basic

You mean the 7 questions on whether your resume can be longer than a page weren't helpful to you?

lol no, I left to go back to work once I saw the questions were going down that path. I asked what I needed to ask and realized it was going to be mostly a waste of time. I was optimistic that Dean Iwerebon was going to be there and I would have an opportunity to introduce myself to her.

Penn and USC still don't have threads either.

(Not really but its kind of my job.)

Ib4 UChi students invade this thread with 47 spreadsheets to show you why you're objectively wrong.

Haha it's funny. A couple of days ago I would have said that I would g to CLS over Chicago no question. Now I think with equal money I would pick Chicago. Man, this cycle is already messing with me.

Any reason for the change?

Maybe it's class size difference? Chicago is much smaller which is a good thing, right?

Well some people might prefer to be in Chicago. And CLS can't really knock Chicago for its location because it's not in the best part of Manhattan and NYU trumps all anyway.

Legal writing though is a true objective plus for CLS and also NYU.

Sure class size is part of it I guess. Mainly I am very interested in Clerkships (UChic > CLS) and am pretty sure that I want to do something with legal academia at some point and on this they are probably equal but the Philosophy and Law program at Chicago puts it over the top for my interests. Also cost of living in Chicago is better.

I'm not saying that CLS isn't great, it is and I would be more than happy to attend.

Gotcha.

Columbia and Chicago are two schools I'm looking at very closely so I appreciate your response. I have gotten the impression Columbia lags behind in clerkships in part because of the allure of biglaw and how strong the chances of getting one of those jobs is at CLS. But, it does seem Chicago gives you a better chance at getting a federal clerkship in general.

Yeah I think there is definitely a selection issue that is self perpetuated by the reputations of the schools but when it comes to supreme court clerkships chicago slaps CLS around. They don't do it in the sheer number of clerkships but because the last 10 year CLS has landed the vast majority of their SCOTUS clerkships with one judge (Ginsberg, no surprise there as she is an alum). So federal i think is more of a selection issue but SCOTUS i think is a little scary at Columbia (especially since Ginsberg probably won't be around when we are graduating).

ETA: If I am not mistaken they have had 16 SCOTUS clerks in the last 10 year. 2 Breyer, 1 Alito, 2 Scalia, 11 Ginsberg.

With respect, the chances of landing a SCOTUS clerkship, even from Yale, are so incredible miniscule, that its not worth factoring into your law school decision
