Can I clarify: Is "hold" Columbia's term for a waitlist? Is it essentially the same thing? Having to submit LOCI's by a certain date seems pretty waitlist-y. Sorry for those to whom this has happened! :/

This. I'm not sure if I should mention anything about other acceptances if this is truely YP.

maybe it's a let's see who withdraws and takes themselves out of contention because we've hit a brick wall? it still seems pretty up in that air as to what people being held can realistically expect to get. Obviously, they weren't held because their numbers didn't cut it...so maybe this is a let's see if you are serious or currently planning to go elsewhere anyway.

Also held. Around 25%lsat and 3.9x gpa. :( Is the consensus that this is better than a reserve?

This seems pretty likely considering all of the high level candidates who have been held.

I think that's probably what it is, see who withdraws. Also held. <25% GPA >75% LSAT.

Damn a lot of good people being held. I'm with one of the previous posters, I think schools are just freaked out and taking longer to decide. This si their way of stalling. But it may backfire. They might just force a lot of people to withdraw and be screwed.

Can we discuss the difference between "held" and "reserve."

I've discovered from LSN that some people with the same numbers and the same complete dates as me were straight put on reserve while I was put on hold.

Reserve is WL, hold is "we haven't decided on you yet, hang tight."

I don't think they'll be screwed, columbia's class size is like 200 people less than HLS no?

so if thats true what the difference between being held and being a early submit who just hasn't heard anything
like why dont they just tell you when they decide instead of saying they havent decided

Yeah, but there aren't that many 171+ people. Once you subtract all the 171+ who are going to throw down deposits at HYS, Chicago, NYU, other T14's with serious money, Columbia will have a bit of trouble if they wait forever to pounce on these candidates.

Might be a mix of YP and regular WL or maybe I'm just an outlier... Held with 25%<LSAT<50% and GPA at 50%.

I think a held status is revocable anytime they feel like changing their mind, it doesn't seem to carry with it any substantial or intelligible judgement whereas a wait list is a process in itself that is saved until April or May for further review. One signals they may or may not need you to fill up the last few places in their incoming class, the other is just kicking the can to an undetermined point down the road and may just amount to a minor annoyance for the applicant. I don't know if that helps.

I submitted my LOCI already. I'm ready for this. Bring it on Columbia. Please bring it on with $75k+ though.

I hear what you're saying. Hopefully they know what they're doing... Good luck to you man, hope you get that envelope soon!

People writing LOCIs, are you guys/gals doing like a "why x" or can it be as simple as expressing your continued interest?
