My package was only sent out yesterday, and the weather's been awful! Also - as, LS22 and other stat-minded people have pointed out, CLS's wave is quite long, at least a work week or so. Besides, as drawstring helpfully pointed out, if I can get in, this year's a free for all in terms of schollies and acceptances!!!! No one lose hope!!!!

Lol I don't think that's how draw meant it.ShrimpToastMasters wrote:My package was only sent out yesterday, and the weather's been awful! What are the requirements for receiving a Butler/Hamilton? Is it purely LSAT and GPA? Do people apply for it or do they just pick them when they admit people?

Hmm - possibly still, not a very nice way to respond. however, onto the more serious matter of my score and schollies - i totes believe score floors being lowered due to smaller applicant pools is entirely possible. however, i think my 173 may be a bit skewed since it's my first/only score. does anyone know if CLS takes score averages/retakes into account?FuriousDuck wrote:I'm pretty sure drawstring was just referring to the LSAT floor, not the overall quality of ShrimpToastMasters' application (which is probably excellent, given the Butler) or his/her value as a person.

Re: Columbia c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
The floors for the Butler and Hamilton have historically been pretty firm at 174/176 respectively. If they're lowering those floors this cycle that is sterling news.FuriousDuck wrote:It's definitely more complicated than just LSAT/GPA, though in the past there appeared to have been pretty high "floors," e.g. 174+ LSAT, 3.9+ GPA for Hamilton, or something like that (don't quote me on the exact numbers). They just pick them when they admit people.residentemma wrote:What are the requirements for receiving a Butler/Hamilton? Is it purely LSAT and GPA? Respectfully, I don't think you should take any offense to what draw said, I don't think it was unkind in the slightest. Draw just stated a fact, that a 173 got a butler where in the past 174 seemed to be the floor. We are all very very happy for you, as evidenced by the many congratulationsShrimpToastMasters wrote:Hmm - possibly still, not a very nice way to respond. however, onto the more serious matter of my score and schollies - i totes believe score floors being lowered due to smaller applicant pools is entirely possible. however, i think my 173 may be a bit skewed since it's my first/only score. does anyone know if CLS takes score averages/retakes into account?FuriousDuck wrote:I'm pretty sure drawstring was just referring to the LSAT floor, not the overall quality of ShrimpToastMasters' application (which is probably excellent, given the Butler) or his/her value as a person.

LS22 - you ignore my score point though and you're our master statistician does anyone know what the reported 174 was - was it a mark of LSAT highest scores, or averages?lawschool22 wrote:Respectfully, I don't think you should take any offense to what draw said, I don't think it was unkind in the slightest. and I forgive you drawstring - it's just not the most pleasant thing to hear when you get a scholly/acceptance. imagine being in my place and someone being all "oh good - YOU got in, so it must be super easy." but yeah - i would totally believe a floor lowering - i'm super ecstatic/amazed/bewildered that i got to benefit from it!!!drawstring wrote:This is exactly what I meant.FuriousDuck wrote:I'm pretty sure drawstring was just referring to the LSAT floor, not the overall quality of ShrimpToastMasters' application (which is probably excellent, given the Butler) or his/her value as a person.

Re: Columbia c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
Just want to say, regardless of the quality of the application, the Butler being awarded to 173 is significant, and entirely new. Of course, 173 has always been a 99th%ile score - an incredible score - but CLS over the past 3+ years has reserved its named scholarships pretty exclusively for 174+, and often only 175+. These have always been CLS's 75th %ile LSAT. Viewed in this light, since the 75th dropped to 173 this year, loosening the threshold makes perfect sense.
Some of us 1L's may have benefited from waiting another cycle! But what's done is done. Congratulations!! It's a huge deal for you. I imagine many of the Butler/Hamilton candidates will head to HLS (or in some cases, YLS) as they do every year, and for some it will make sense, but it's definitely worth looking hard at your goals and the kind of debt you would be walking out with. This can't be stressed enough. For V10 firm work in NYC, for example, there is no better choice than the Hamilton/Butler (massive need based packages from cambridge or new haven as major exceptions). The people I know who chose CLS under these circumstances seem happy with their choice. But you'll all face this decision soon enough regardless.
Cheers!
