Yeah I agree with ls22, that's why I asked that question. Taking away invaluable bargaining opportunities isn't that great a decision unless your parents decided to fund your education or you're independently wealthy.... Actually even then it's a bad idea because you could still save a TON of money

But if I am waitlisted it isn't really a good bargaining opportunity, right? (Maybe I am missing something here)Gary wrote:@ jessasaurus

Re: Columbia c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
Placed on hold...applied RD in September.
Does anyone know the following:
-how many people are placed on hold
-how likely it is for an applicant to be accepted after a hold
-any other pertinent info
I looked through the thread and I swear it has to be in here but I can't seem to find it so apologies for any repeated questions!!!

People get off the WL and get Butlers, Hamiltons, Ruby's, etc.Jessasaurus wrote:But if I am waitlisted it isn't really a good bargaining opportunity, right? (Maybe I am missing something here)Gary wrote:@ jessasaurus

Anyone know how quickly people tend to get in after sending a LOCI? If it's just a case of showing interest for the high numbers people, I hope there is some quick movement.

Hold stats are crazy. Any guesses on whats coming next for those that weren't held? Big ding or admit batch? Scary.

They might be looking for people to withdraw before un-holding? Wild speculation.

Seems like valid speculation to me.thewaves wrote:They might be looking for people to withdraw before un-holding? Wild speculation.

Re: Columbia c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
Oh my gosh, reading through today's posts was scary. What is Columbia's plan this year? I really can't see any reason to hold people who are above both 75ths. Sorry to all the Holds out there
I was feeling fairly confident about my numbers until today but now I'm really really worried. Any February completes get a decision yet?

I hope it's just concern with their yield, and thus they're holding strong applicants who aren't quite in named-scholarship territory to see who withdraws. Their apps dropped by the second largest percentage out of the T14 last year and their medians went down, so I don't think they can be too picky.

What about those of us who were held who don't have YP stats? Is a semi-reverse splitter like myself just completely out of luck?

Well if you're held it means you're still being considered, so I wouldn't say you're out of luck at this point.

Held today too. 170/3.92, above-average softs, non-URM.
I totally agree with the YP theory for some of the people on here who have been held. Not for the others though, and definitely not for me. Besides my stats not being that great for Columbia, I had 3 LORs tailored to specifically to Columbia, so they know I'm interested

I don't know about other people, but I would think if you've gotten a T6 full scholarship (assuming a lower-ranked school isn't a first choice for whatever reason) it make plenty of sense to withdraw from other schools. I'm withdrawing from anywhere that WL's me (except maybe Yale), and I'm planning to withdraw from other schools that have admitted me already soon (no reason to take up a spot). With HLS and a Hamilton, there's just no reason to not withdraw, really. Anyway, I know that situation is rare, but you don't have to be wealthy to withdraw from schools early on. (And I can't imagine anything Penn or UVA could give anyone would be better for bargaining than a Hamilton/Ruby/Vanderbilt.)Gary wrote:@ jessasaurus

I did get into CLS, but I'm somewhat on the same page as the poster above: withdraw from every place that waitlists me. For me, until now this has been Mich and GULC — schools I was never too keen about in the first place, so waiting until the summer is just not a viable option.caiti wrote:I don't know about other people, but I would think if you've gotten a T6 full scholarship (assuming a lower-ranked school isn't a first choice for whatever reason) it make plenty of sense to withdraw from other schools. Finishing up my Need Access app and holding out hope that I will come off the held list. Anyone know if Columbia requires need access for merit scholarships?

Nah, you could still get in off the waitlist, and if you carry a HYS, then you can definitely have money come your way. Don't count yourself out.JSWright101 wrote:jy9626 wrote:Seriously. Wtf. Cheer up by the way. At least one of HYS will likely like us.
Jan 22...which is late. I wanted money from Columbia but it looks like IF I get in, I'm getting nada.
