Re: Stanford c/o 2017 (2013-2014 applicants)
Is there any rhyme or reason to the chronology of Stanford's decision-making process?
Earlier I remember seeing posts by some folks saying that Stanford moves forward rather linearly, as opposed to jumping all over the place like Harvard does. But I went complete early Dec and have heard nothing, and it looks like people who went complete way after me have heard. Does this mean its likely they actually have read my application and are just sitting on it for the time being?

From what I can tell, it seems like they are moving in a fairly linear fashion with the exception of URMs. Dings in particular have seemed to be moving by completion date.
But take this with a grain of salt - just basing this off of my (somewhat sporadic) following of this thread.

I am in your boat. Already got my Harvard acceptance, not a peep from Stanford even though I submitted like 12/1 or so.Sojourner2 wrote:Is there any rhyme or reason to the chronology of Stanford's decision-making process?

My guess is that they move chronologically and re-review applications if they've flagged them. They may hold on to applications for extended periods to see if the applicant can fit into the imagined class. This is only conjecture from close thread-stalking/blog reading.

This seems reasonable. In your thread-stalking, have you (or anyone else) stumbled upon how specifically SLS conducts their faculty review? Ex. for Yale, only certain % applicants even get to the review, then groups of professors independently grade applicants. Is there similar sort of information available for Stanford?thewaves wrote:My guess is that they move chronologically and re-review applications if they've flagged them. As a URM, my app went as linear as it gets.juicebox wrote:From what I can tell, it seems like they are moving in a fairly linear fashion with the exception of URMs. Dings in particular have seemed to be moving by completion date.

Nope, no one knows anything... except when you walk by Faye's office you sometimes see stacks of manila folders, but she is NEVER looking at them!Quest4Knowledge wrote:This seems reasonable. yes, but you also applied fairly late. i think that's what he's talking about - they're moving roughly in order of completion, except in the case of urms they want. correct me if I'm wrong, juicebox - is this what you're saying?aboutmydaylight wrote:As a URM, my app went as linear as it gets.juicebox wrote:From what I can tell, it seems like they are moving in a fairly linear fashion with the exception of URMs. Dings in particular have seemed to be moving by completion date.

I applied in September and have still heard nothing. Expecting a ding or WL at this point.

What evidence is there that Stanford has traditionally had a look-back wave at all? I combed through a few years of LSN data and I found very few cases of individuals with December or earlier submit dates getting accepted past late January.

Re: Stanford c/o 2017 (2013-2014 applicants)
This definitely isn't the whole picture. There are a fair number of us who were "skipped" over, and the same has been true in previous years. I think thwaves got it right: there are probably some of us being held for further review. Personally, I was complete in early Nov and have heard nothing, and I know there are people who applied before I who are in the same boat.juicebox wrote:From what I can tell, it seems like they are moving in a fairly linear fashion with the exception of URMs. Dings in particular have seemed to be moving by completion date.

You can see a scatterplot here:

It's generally linear, I guess, but there are plenty of exceptions (the shape is even more noticeable if you look at 2011-2012).

Re: Stanford c/o 2017 (2013-2014 applicants)
Stanford admits a small class and LSN is maybe 10-20% of it maximum. So don't expect to see a lot of people. I looked at last years data a week or two ago and IIR there were maybe ten or so people who submitted before Jan and were accepted after mid Feb. There were also about 15 early applicants who were rejected after the general waves, plus a bunch of wait lists. (See link in my previous posts.) All this definitely suggests to me that there are some people who are "maybe"s.tparks wrote:What evidence is there that Stanford has traditionally had a look-back wave at all? I have figured it out. When my application came in there 4 months ago, the admissions staff got SO EXCITED about it that in their drunken celebration they misplaced it behind a desk, never to be seen again.

It also probably takes time for them to amend the school charter to allow the admissions team to offer you tons of merit aid .wtrc wrote:I have figured it out. I apologize, as I haven't been following this thread closely, but just tried to log on to my status checker and can't. Has this been an issue others have experienced?

Canadian student checking in - I'm also an American citizen so I figured I'd give HYS + CLS a go.
DLS a day or two ago (it doesn't give a specific date and I didn't check everyday). Good luck to everyone else waiting and congrats to everyone who got in! I got into my Canadian school of choice so I'm not too bummed out .

Any thoughts on whether or not Stanford will try to get most non-WL acceptances out before ASW the first week in April? That would make sense to me, but not sure if this has been the case in the past.
