Sad but true. In my opinion this is kind of a dick move though. I would hope that a school like Stanford would still care about our impression of them, which to be honest has gone downhill because of this process.love4life29 wrote:They're probably just deciding between waitlists and rejects, and don't have a lot of incentive to move quickly.chizzy wrote:but why hold people till the bitter end?love4life29 wrote:Given that they are making us wait til 10 days before deposits are due almost everywhere, I doubt they consider us big losses. Otherwise they would have probably just accepted us earlier with the other 99.9% of the class. According to LSN, approximately the same # of people have been accepted this year already as have been accepted the previous two years.

You guys really think they put that much thought into that? Data says they accept less than 10% of their wl. Seems like a waste of time to deliberate over who gets the dubious honor.Constantine wrote:Sad but true. In my opinion this is kind of a dick move though. Wouldn't it make more sense to wl based on stats and then so more through review when it comes time to do acceptances off the wl?

i can't speak for stanford, but i do know that the wl process here at MY institution is brutal (and there are years we take no one from the wl). the committee rages with one another to reach a consensus (and this is a group of people who genuinely like one another) - they are locked in a room for hours on end deliberating on who to keep and who to outright reject, oftentimes with explicit instructions from directors and deans - "we have 20 left - get it to 10," for instance. and of course each committee member may have his or her own "favorites" for whom they are advocating. it's tough.Chalupa-Batman wrote: You guys really think they put that much thought into that? To answer the bolded question, even if it was meant to be condescending, no...but that's fine. I'm not someone who gets interested in Team Harvard vs. Team Stanford fan fiction. Maybe check the choosing a law school section for Harvard vs. Stanford topics.lastsamurai wrote:Maybe work on your internet tone a bit (see bold text above).ianfaircloud wrote: Thanks for the replies. I'm not confident that Stanford will admit me, but I'm optimistic. I haven't written it off, for sure. It just looks like Stanford likes the non-trads, people with degrees, "experience," etc. I can sense a lot of frustration in this thread on Stanford's taking its time.
Just to be clear: There's no H vs S vs Y thing here. I'm not suggesting that one is *objectively* better than the other. I'm suggesting that, for most people, H is going to be subjectively better than S. Hence my question. Get it? That's why I said, "For me, it's Yale, Harvard, Stanford, in that order." I assumed it's that for most people. But for people who are entertaining a Stanford over a Harvard offer, I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

I stand corrected. My alternative theory is that it's some sort of deal or no deal process.wealtheow wrote:

Is there any reason for this? It's not like waitlists are binding for schools.Chalupa-Batman wrote:I stand corrected. My alternative theory is that it's some sort of deal or no deal process.wealtheow wrote:

Re: Stanford c/o 2017 (2013-2014 applicants)
i'm not entirely sure, but i think it does have something to do with the general unpredictability of yield... and keeping selectivity % in the right vicinity. you don't want anyone on the waitlist you wouldn't actually admit, but you also don't want to have to pull too many from the waitlist... and, i do think there is a fairness/human component involved, i.e., if a student has the qualifications but there simply is no more room, is it actually fair/reasonable to reject them? (the answer here, at least, is no)scoobers wrote:Is there any reason for this? It's not like waitlists are binding for schools.Chalupa-Batman wrote:I stand corrected. I just called Stanford. they said they are still making straight acceptances and are trying to finish by the 30th. sounded like they were behind though.

I don't exactly believe this though Like, I don't see why they would lie, but I could see the person answering the phone being told "as long as we are reviewing apps we can make straight acceptances"

For those of us in the land of radio silence: what about your application do you think it is that has kept you still in the running this far? I'm banking on the Ford's abiding concern for the exquisitely crafted personal statement.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
