Well shit.

updating LSN or TLS with your details every time it happens is a sure way to be identifiable.
Whether it helps or hurts depends on what you put down, plain and simple.

Also, at least one school's fin/aid has said (probably as a response to TLS) that they "dont want to reward a squeeky wheel", so it can be harmful in negotiations

BTW I know this happens much much more in med schools. Even after you're admitted.

I actually recently read in the news a couple weeks ago, that a particular state made it illegal for employers to review facebook pages before making decisions to hire (I can’t remember which state this was though). But yes, I think for any employer or school to look at a forum where someone is, for the most part anonymous (or presumes they are anonymous), is unfair. I suppose this is really just a matter of opinion though.
But, what if they're talking about that particular school or business? (Like what occurs here). I mean surely you realize there's a limit.
Well, if they are under what is presumed to be an anonymous name, I still am having a hard time accepting that they should be exposed. That said, of course there is a limit, because even someone who post anonymously should reasonably expect that their post will draw attention if they are extremely negative, and harmful to the school/ business’ reputation. Seriously though, how many people are stupid enough to say seriously negative things against a school or business that they have applied to while awaiting a decision? I am not saying that it does not happen, and I can even see a little frustration while awaiting a decision, but to publicly bash an institution repeatedly to me sounds stupid, especially if you are hoping to be a part of them.

Still, you are actually bringing up a lot of points that I didn’t think of before posting this thread, and I will be man enough to admit that you have me rethinking my position a little. But not entirely.

Yeah I get that. I was more trying to point out the misconceptions people ITT have in saying that its impossible, takes toi much time etc. Also the motives some people gave were lolz. But then I got off topic.

Just don't be stupid or needlessly be an asshole/troll - then there really isn't too much to be afraid of either way. I'm relatively easy to out and don't care too much because I don't say much here that I wouldn't in real life. I curse a bit too much but whatever, that's also part of my personality.

Not sure what the big deal of adcoms connecting the dots is unless you suck here, of which I would argue you probably suck everywhere and it'll come out in your PS or interview

Tl;dr - The prospect of lurking adcoms isn't so scary if you just expect them to be here and act accordingly.

I made my user name my real name. I'm really not afraid of an admissions committee knowing who I am. I don't have anything to hide.

I think they may check from time to time to see what's being said, but I don't think they identify specific people. I've given out numbers in some posts but I always changed them a bit, tho sticking to the same changed numbers throughout every post. If I received an interview, I made sure to wait untik another batch of people received it and went through interviews before asking how their interviews went to prevent being pinpointed to a certain batch. I'm sure other posters do the same and adoms know this. If they go by my numbers and similar factors and decide to judge in any way, good luck to whoever has those numbers and applied to similar schools. Lol

wow - i never put serious thought into this until now. i just edited out all of my posts that could identify me/show school preferences. maybe this would explain why i got waitlisted at UVA and duke with a 174. i should probably even edit that sentence out.

What about the wisdom of letting something like TLS or LSN influence their decision? With the number of people who fudge numbers and the thousands and thousands of applicants, it seems like it would be difficult to say with 100% certainty who any particular applicant is. At least, difficult enough that the effort and persistance would hardly be worth it.

If you can't say for sure who a poster is, then it would be incredibly unethical to let that influence your decision. It probably only happens in the most extreme cases, which don't include people who say things like "this is my safety school" or "I applied here because I got a fee waiver." If you were YP'ed, it's probably because of math.

How come people don't just use the Office of Career Services at their schools for helping with personal statements and LOCI etc? By posting it there is always the risk of someone stealing enough of it for you to look like you plagiarized a TLS personal statement and made it your own.

+1

Super easy to figure out who I am (my name is on the bottom of my website with a link to my FB profile.) But I try to be nice and helpful on here :)

Because most giant undergrads have no idea what they're doing in regards to law school applications. Mine told me 4-6 pages is standard, even if the schools specifically say 2.

Without trying that hard, I've figured out who like 10 TLSers are. I'm not an internet super-sleuth, it's just soooo easy sometimes.

Career services folks are notoriously inept. TLS has its flaws, but there are a LOT of good brains to pick here.

I only browsed some of these responses, but I actually completely forgot that this happened until now- I must have totally blacked it out. Obviously this doesn't happen at a lot of schools, so take it as you will. TL;DR: yes, adcoms read the site and occasionally try to figure out who people are.

Last year, I was waitlisted at a school. I visited, toured, chatted with an adcom. Sent a follow-up e-mail and thanked them and reiterated my interest in the school, got a nice response. The next morning I wake up and I'm cc'd on an e-mail from that same adcom to a fellow adcom at that school with a post from TLS and my 'thank you' email- they were speculating if I was the same person who talked about going on a tour in the TLS "applicants to X school" thread. (I wasn't, I barely post, as evidenced by my profile.) It was clear that the person had hit the wrong button: instead of forward, she hit reply all and included me.

I sent some e-mail back in response... can't remember what I even said but asked if they needed any more information from me, was super polite and I think asked if they perhaps accidentally included me on an e-mail?

It was probably one of the strangest things ever during my whole admissions process and obviously I couldn't post on TLS about it, since they were actively monitoring threads. (I actually think this is my first post since then, since I was so freaked out I quit reading TLS for a little while.) Anyways, I didn't get off the wait list there. Wah wah.

I know I mentioned this in an earlier post, but am I the only who finds behavior like that kind of reckless on their part? It almost sounds like a witch hunt, and you can never be 100% sure who a poster is (as evidenced by the fact that the admissions person was wrong in the above anecdote.) If they actually let unverified information influence their decision making process, that would be pretty unprofessional.
