I have read a few old TLS posts and LSACs stance (http://www.lsac.org/jd/apply/whom-to-admit.asp), but seems to be a little ambiguity. So if you have deposits at multiple schools on May 15 other schools can see? But what about before May 15, because Lsac says, "Each year, LSAC provides participating law schools with periodic reports detailing the number of applicants who have submitted seat deposits or commitments at other participating schools, along with identification of those other schools. Beginning May 15 each year, these reports now also include the names and LSAC account numbers for all candidates who have deposits/commitments at multiple participating schools" suggesting that some data is known before May 15..?

Also, what about Scholly offers - can other schools see these? And if you have deposits at two places, waiting to get fin. aid offer from one school, but holding on to your other school, how long until these schools can force you to accept one way or the other?

What if a decision can't be made by April 1st and I were to put two or three deposits down? How would the schools view this and what would be the consequences, if any?

Wow really? I didn't know that. That clears up a lot of things for me. So it's common practice to deposit at two, three, or even four schools for the first deadline, due to reasons you mentioned? That's awesome. Didn't really understand that until now.

Np! Try not to be swayed when schools urge you to make a final commitment early. It's self-serving for them and it only hurts you. If you can afford the deposits, then deposit at multiple schools that you're strongly considering and then start negotiating merit awards. Even after the second deposit don't be afraid to email them and say "I'm not sure how feasible it is for me to attend law school at all given my current finances, would you consider increasing my scholarship?" Worst that can happen is that they say no. Schools get progressively more desperate as candidates withdraw and their applicant pool becomes smaller.

That makes a lot of sense. You're helping me out on two diff threads haha thanks a lot. So, you think it's a little early to send out initial scholarship negotiations? I like the idea of strong negotiation after depositing to a couple of schools. I'm sure they will be more desperate and it puts the bind on them to give me more of an incentive to attend their school rather than the others I deposited at.

I double deposited, I never got threatened or anything like that. One school increased its scholarship, the other just stood still.

Also, I found that most deposit deadlines were anything but hard. I refused to deposit and kept negociating with GW after the deadline bc I was not gonna drop $1500 (was in off wait list so combined) if I wasn't going there.

Well the number of deadlines and the restrictions for each deadlines will depend on the school and each school will outline their specific policies. For example WUSTL warns candidates that they could lose their scholly if they're deposited at multiple schools by the 2nd deadline.

As for the general analysis/commentary on the negotiation situation...it's just sort of the conventional accumulated wisdom? Ask any of the veterans on TLS and they'll tell u something similar, if not the same thing. FWIW this is my second application cycle. Schools respond to negotiation. They do increase scholarship as they get more desperate. It's just understood that applicants will likely be deposited at multiple schools for the first deadline. No legitimate school would challenge that or demand a binding commitment by the first deadline.
